Hey guys! Toby just pooped this, i’ve never seen this kind of poop from him before. Usually its only dry solid round poops. Is this normal? Im waiting to hear back from the vet but just asking for some second opinions. Here’s a pic Note he is about 4.5 or 5 weeks old.

That is a cecal! Nothing to worry about. Bunnies eat these for the extra nutrients they provide. It only really becomes a problem when they’re older and not eating them, because that usually means their diet is too rich. But at his age it’s perfectly fine. You might see one squished at some point, and it might scare the poop out of you because it looks like diarrhea xD

These look like cecotropes, which are a kind of dropping that rabbits normally eat straight from their bottom while grooming, so you don’t usually see them. The reason for this is that wild rabbit diets of grasses, etc, which are pretty low in basic nutrients. So, the rabbit GI tract concentrates vitamins and nutrients into these small pellets, and the rabbits eat them in order to have a second chance to absorb as much nutrition as possible. Domestic rabbits often have a diet rich in nutrients because us humans have access to better food for them, so missing the occasional cecotrope shouldn’t be a problem. My rabbits sometimes don’t eat them, I think as long as you’ve got a good diet of lots of hay and some green leafy veggies, everything should be fine. 🙂

That’s a cecotrope. Usually bunnies eat those for the nutrients but sometimes they can leave them around. Often they leave them if they have a diet that is too rich but it’s also normal in young rabbits to leave a few here and there too.

Yes, feel free to pop back into his cage if you find them or even hand feed it to him (it sounds gross but as they usually love it – I think it helps with bonding). If he doesn’t want it, then don’t worry – he’ll eat if he wants/needs it. They also occasionally eat their normal poos too. All normal

We have an English Angora and when he was a baby, he’d get them stuck on his wool in places he couldn’t quite reach so we’d hand feed them to him. He’s now one and we barely ever see any.

99% of the time with my buns, if they’ve left a cecal they don’t want it at all so I put it in the bin so it doesn’t get squished on their fur.

Thanks everyone! Much more helpful and detailed than my vet who just said “dont worry about it.” im still waiting over a week now for Toby’s test results. Wish there was another vet that specializes in bunnies around here this one is kind of a disaster but at least she knows her stuff.
