        hi all.

today Toby seems really lazy because I bought him this dog mat that he’s obsessed with. He’s gotten up to eat some hay, but not much. Lately, he’s been waisting a lot of hay and just wants to wait till his serving of pellets or veggies. But today, when he eat some hay, most of his poops came in like a string looking thing. It was like 3 poops on one brown string. Is the string part hair? Lol I’m new to this stuff but I’m also a bit concerned since he’s acting all lazy. He is currently shedding like crazy so maybe that has to do with it. Yesterday, he was acting like his normal bubbly little self. Can someone please just tell me what this stringy poop and lazy type behavior is. Toby has been grooming himself a lot today. He’s also making this weird sound with his teeth. Idk if it’s tooth grinding or something else. He doesn’t seem to be in pain at all. He’s flopped various times today. If he lets me, I’m going to try to brush him with the hair buster comb I bought for him. Ughh he’s not eating hay and it’s getting me stressed and worried

This could be anywhere from only mildly concerning to very concerning, depending on what’s in his gut. Most of the time, rabbits will get a bit of a bad appetite day/uncomfortable day when they’re pushing fur through their gut that’s accumulated through grooming, more so than typical because they’re molting and are ingesting a lot more fur. As long as they’re eating hay and drinking water as normal, the fur will make its way through. It becomes very concerning when the rabbit stops pooping, which means the fur has blocked their pipes and veterinary intervention is needed to move it along.

If he’s still pooping, that’s a good sign. Whenever you notice your rabbit is molting/shedding a lot, you need to, at a minimum, groom them really well once a day in order to minimize the dangers of ingesting their own fur. Every fur strand you remove via brush/comb/hand is one less they eat, and that’s very positive. Even rabbits who hate being groomed need to go through this potential stressful daily grooming because being stressed once a day by grooming is much better than life-threatening gut blockage by fur ingestion.

The fact that he passed a string of pearl poops is somewhat positive, because he’s passed a chunk of fur out, rather than it staying in there. There could be more in there, and you also don’t want that much more to get in him, so definitely begin grooming routinely.

A small piece of pineapple once a day will also help fur move through.

As for the teeth sounds, when exactly does he make the sounds, and can you describe the sound?

          — Don’t feel too bad about being uninformed. This is something you learn over time, and right now, the best you can do is absorb the information and act right away! Even just yesterday, Wick was having a bad day because he was passing fur. He shot out two furry poos and after that he was back to being normal.

String of pearl poops are a sign that bun is ingesting too much fur. I groom my two every single day and they still do the odd stringy poo. Without grooming, they do more stringy pearl poops. It’s really important to groom as much as you can. I would say the hairy poops aren’t necessarily a bad sign because it shows the fur is passing through HOWEVER, ingesting so much can cause a blockage. I’d also be concerned with Toby’s lethargy and poor appetite.

How long has he not been eating much hay? It’s not really something you can shrug off. A decrease in hay consumption needs to be taken seriously.

Thank you so much! This was EXTREMELY helpful and I’m glad I know some of the information about this topic now

As far as brushing, I’m going to follow what you said about brushing once a day. I may do it twice a day if he lets me and if I have time. I’m glad to hear he string poops are pretty positive. He hasn’t pooped in I’d say an hour or two and has been sleepy. I gently picked him up and put him in his litter box and he ate a little bit of hay. He hasn’t drank water today, but he ate all of his bowl of veggies which I rinsed with water. I’m crossing my fingers and am pretty sure that this is most likely nothing bad since he ate a whole bowl of veggies, pooped a bunch earlier, and ate some hay(not a lot though.) But that doesn’t mean I’m not going to pay attention to it anymore. I’m going to keep an eye on him and his behavior. He’s definitely shedding though, so I think this has to do with molting(etc.)

Now with the tooth sound, it was kind of like a clicking sound. I know tooth grinding is not positive with rabbits, but he does it often so I think it’s a rabbit he developed. He even does it when he binkies and runs around. But most of the time, he does it when he’s stretched out on the ground, and ready to fall asleep. Right now, he just flopped. he’s been doing it all day (more than usual.) But I definitely know that flopping is positive with bunnies. He’s been in my room all day all comfortable on this XL dog bed so maybe that’s why he’s acting all lazy cause he’s comfy. After I brush him, I’m going to bring him back down to his x pen so he can focus on eating more.

The pearl/stringy poops are definitely from him shedding, but I am going to brush him now and every day while he’s molting. I’m a bit concerned about the lazy behavior as well, but I’m hoping that it’s because he’s all comfy and stretched out on this plush XL dog mat. He hasn’t eaten hay in about 1 hour, but I’m bringing him down to his x pen so he can focus on eating more. I’m definitely going to pay really close attention to this situation and I will keep you guys posted. Crossing my fingers he will be okay!

Luna gets a little bit lazier when she’s molting too. Hopefully it’s just something like that. With you brushing him more and keeping a close watch on his eating habits, he should be good .

                      Good morning

So today, Toby is definitely feeling better than yesterday. When I first woke up, I went to his x pen and checked on him. He ate most of the hay from his hay rack, and their were many light brown poops in his cage. I heard the light brown poops means more hay consumption which is great. Since he didn’t eat much hay, I skipped his serving of pellets so he could eat more hay. Also, when I went to his x pen this morning, there was fur every where! He definitely shed a lot last night! Someone told me that when rabbits are shedding like crazy, you can gently just pluck out some fur from their coat and it will come out. Well, I tried that and no fur came out I don’t exactly know if this is something to worry about, but it concerned me because since he is shedding, fur should most likely come out. And when I gave him his veggies earlier today, he ate them, but his tummy made a gurgling type noise. So many odd things are happening to him and I don’t even know whether to worry or not. I also don’t know if things happening to him are dangerous or not. I lithium out of the pen, and he biked a lot and ran in circles around the room. With that said, I’m glad he ate hay, pooped, drank water, ate veggies, and binkied. The only things I’m concerned about from this morning was the gurgling sound from his stomach, and me nothing able to gently plug fur from hi hair. Again, I’m still learning about rabbits, so some of my questions my sound odd

                      Thanks in advance!

I don’t think poop colour means more hay consumption but it’s good that he’s done plenty of them anyway.

For my rabbits, plucking isn’t particularly successful. If I pet Buttercup, I see tons of fur flying off but if I try and pluck – nothing. Were you able to groom him at all?

Glad to hear that Toby’s not the only bun who couldn’t get hair plucked off. And yes, yesterday I was successful in grooming him and a lot of fur came out. The brush I use is amazing! I’m definitely going to keep on grooming him and I actually may do it twice today since he’s shedding like crazy! but I’m so thankful he’s doing better, and I hope he stays tat why. Do any of you happen to know what the gurgling noise from his stomach was?

Poop color can be lighter based on dryness, so if they just ate veggies for example, the poop will probably be darker because it’s more wet. That’s my observation with Wick. The number of golden-flakes you see in the poop can increase based on hay consumption, from my observations. It’s like the poop was rolled in gross-colored glitter.

For hand plucking/grooming (what I do with Wick), you need to find the particular molt spots. For Wick, he molts in patches/lines, and those will “release” at different times. I do very slight tugs at usual places to see what’s released that day, and I’ll revisit everywhere every day to keep up with the molt. Most loose fur accumulates at the butt/hind leg area. It can also happen on the forehead/eyes for Wick too. So with hand-grooming, if none is releasing at a certain spot, just keep feeling around and see if there are any other spots that might be ready to be pulled. Typically if you find your rabbit grooming a particular spot for a long time, you can interrupt them and pluck some fur from that spot to help them out.

Gurgly belly is usually gas is present/working it’s way through, which seems natural since your rabbit had some upset stomach problems earlier. You can do belly massages and give simethicone to help. Again, water consumption and hay consumption will help.

I wouldn’t be worried unless your rabbit isn’t eating. as you probably know rabbits cant thro up hairballs so if they ingest hair it has to come out thru there poop. So this could actually be good because that means your bun is getting the hair out, instead of having a blockage. hope I could help
