We have a house rabbi who we keep out in our fenced front yard about 4-5 hours per day.  we’ve been feeding him Oxbow animal health essentials pellets.  the instructions say to feed about 1/4 cup per day. We also supplement with Timothy hay.

Should we adjust the feed schedule downward based on him nibbling greens in our front yard? Or should we keep the same feeding amounts?

I would base the amount of pellets on the rabbit’s weight, and since they are supposed to be eating a lot of greens and hay too, I wouldn’t cut down on the pellets for that reason, unless your bunny is overweight.

PS. I am hoping that your bunny’s pen is safe from predators?

You shouldn’t ‘supplement’ pellets with hay – the bunny should always have access to hay, and 90% of a bunny’s diet should be hay or grass. If he’s eating grass then that might effect his appetite for hay.

How much does he weigh? Obviously the instruction on the bag of pellets tend to be more generous than needed as they want you to get through more of them! I give my 1kg bunnies a tablespoon each a day, and my 2kg bunny a tablespoon and a half.

I feed my own two buns (about 3 pounds each) a combined total of 1/4 cup per day, working out to 1/8 cup each (as it recommends on the bag), given once daily in the morning. They get a large handful of hay at the same time to last them through the day (it goes on top of the remainder of the previous evening’s hay offering, so the pile tends to bulk up by the time it’s time to change the litter).
