I need some advice. I have a 5 year old New Zealand White buns who is coo coo for pellets. He is a good hay eater but I’m pretty sure his first love is pellets. I had a 13 year old bun he was bonded to and because of her age and trying to keep weight on her I had been giving her a higher fat diet and it’s got all the delicious naughty stuff like banana chips and all that, they used to be on dehydrated alfalfa but now Mr Buns is hooked and he has had stasis about three times twice within one week and he is quite fat so it’s time for a diet change! So I have started giving him a half cup of the fatty stuff with 1/4 of the Martin’s as I’m trying to be careful not to upset his GI. So far so good, how much of the alfalfa Pell should I be giving him a day as he is an, 8.5lbs bun and I want him not to get depressed since he’s not getting the “good stuff” anymore. Is 1/2 cup of pellets for him a day too much? Any tips on how to increase the intake on hay? He gets unlimited but is grass hay or Timothy hay better? Too many options!! On top of all that he seems to prefer alfalfa hay as he’s gotten into Petunias!

House Rabbit Society recommends 1/4 to 1/2 cup pellets per 6 lbs. body weight so 1/2 cup would be about right, however, some bunnies cannot handle that much. In his younger days, my 5lb boy just couldn’t handle the amount of pellets he was getting and got frequent, serious stasis episdes. My vet recommended i drastically reduce his pellets and it helped him a great deal. I cut his pellets down to only a little over 1 TBSP per day. He gets more veggies and unlimited hay. Weight needs to be carefully monitored with such a drastic pellet reduction. My vet is pretty anti-pellet. She feels bunnies digestive systems are not made for pellets.

Most bunnies (including mine) prefer Orchard Grass as it’s softer and sweeter. It’s as good nutrition wise as Timothy.

Great thank you so much! I am going to stick with 1/2 cup for him and I think the quality of pellets by switching to martins will help. He’s not as much as a veggie lover as my female is but he eats them all throughout the day thank you!!
