Hey all, Bun Bunz got spayed yesterday! Yeah! Been looking forward to that day. She takes her metacam like it was her favorited treat – thank goodness. But she’s really not eating or drinking. I have her a bit of water through the syringe which held the metacam, but I’m guessing the taste wore off and she really doesn’t drink from her bowl or the syringe. Also I’ve fed her treats- chunks of apple, oranges, oxbow banan slices- she munched on some of the apple, are the orange piece ( yes I know high in sugars…I’m more concerned about getting food in her belly then that at the moment). I don’t have access to critical car- I live in Brampton ontario and it’s not something pet stores carry or most emergency vets around here. So since she seems to eat fruits and veggies I’m going to try and get some of those into her. She just turned 6 months- have had veggies before as snacks or treats to gear her up for the transition into adult bunny meals. That said what are some fruits and veggies which are gentle on bunny tummies. I’m keeping an eye out for critical care in the area but it looks like she’ll eat- just not pellets and I will force feed her water if I have to.

You can soak some of her normal pellets in water and feed the slurry to her by syringe. That works almost as well as Critical Care. You’re right about treats, in this situation you don’t have to worry too much about sugar content, she can get what she wants to eat. The important thing is that she eats. It’s common for bunnies to not want their pellets after their spay/neuter. I don’t know why, but they tend to prefer veggies, especially fragrant herbs (parsley, dill, cilantro, mint) and fruit and also hay for a couple of days.

Make sure she doesn’t get cold. A bunny that’s not eating much and has been under full anesthesia can get cold “from the inside”. That’s very dangerous, because it can lead to the body shutting down. If she’s very inactive and her ears are ice cold, try warming her up with a warm water bottle or hand warmers wrapped in a towel. Make sure she has space enough to move away from the heat if she doesn’t want it.

If you can make some pellet mash, that will help her get some fiber and water. Until then, agreed that eating something is better than nothing. How is her appetite today?

I’m ecstatic to say Bun Bunz is up and about, bouncing around, eating like a pig and making a full recovery from her spay.

I’m soo happy i was finally able to get her in to be spayed. The vet did a wonderful job.
