I am making a hutch out of a tv unit about 40″ wide, 23″ deep and 38″ tall. Trying to decide if I should do 2 or 1 shelf. One site online said a 4-8lb rabbit needs a cage height of 14 inches. I expect the bun to be 6-7lbs. Does that height sound right? My last bun was pretty much free to roam. I plan to have this bun out as much as possible (hutch will be in the kitchen) but want to make sure he has enough room. I have 38″ inches total so if I did the bottom 14″ then I would have two more 12″ sections above (ramps to move up/down). Or would it be better to have just two sections of 19″?

What’s the length and width of the unit? Sounds like a cool idea. I’d go with the two sections of 19″ because I like to allow my buns to be able to stretch up on their back feet when they have to be kept in, and 12″ is definitely not tall enough.

This is what I had originally planned. The top would basically be a lounging area. Would this work? It should allow lots of extra headroom from the litterbox and 2nd floor.

That sounds like it could be okay for a baby bunny but I wouldn’t keep a full-grown bun in there if it’s only 12 inches wide and 23 inches long, though I may be interpreting that picture wrong. My bun is only about 3-4 pounds and she wouldn’t have much room to hop around in there.
