        Hello All,

I am new to bunnies and I’m so excited to welcome two new bunnies into my family in march. I am getting a large outdoor hutch and would like to know opinions on ways to weather proof the hutch. I live in the rainy side of Washington and just would like my hutch to last as long as possible. As well as keeping the bunnies safe. I heard that Thompson’s wood sealer or Restore Liquid Armor were good but just want to make sure if the bunnies chew they will not get sick. Or if anyone has any other recommendations I would love to hear them!

Attached below is a picture of the hutch.

        Thanks!

Hi, and welcome to binky bunny!

Binkybunny is actually mainly a house rabbit forum, so unfortunately not many people here will have experience with outdoor housing.

Perhaps we could persuade you to have them as house pets? Rabbits indoors are so rewarding! If you have any questions about whats its like to have them inside, and what they need, I’d be happy to help

If you are set on outside, that hutch looks like a pretty good size, but it might be good to attach a run to it too. Once you’ve seen bunnies run around and binky, you’ll understand why!

I’m not sure about weather proof sealers, but I do think you should check if they’re bunny safe first – I doubt that most are.

            Thank you for the response,

The bunnies will be indoor bunnies but when they get play time outside I would like an enclosed area that they have shelter along with a run to jump and play. That is what the hutch will be outside the whole time and I don’t want it to weather before my bunnies get some good use out of it. Sorry I didn’t make that clear. So this will be a hutch that will stay outside and on nice sunny days the bunnies will be able to go outside without me worrying about if they are safe or have enough shelter, shade, all that.

            Thank you!

Oh I see, sorry! I’m glad you’re keeping them inside, you’ll be able to build such a good relationship with them

To be honest, I would just throw a tarpaulin over it when they’re not in it – it’s much easier if they won’t be living in it.

I found this list about bunny-safe sealants, but I think they’re mostly UK brands, but perhaps it will give you somewhere to start.
