             Hello!

I am a soon-to-be rabbit owner and Millie will have to be in a cage part-time, and I’m wondering if it is safe to make the outer-part of the wood I’m using painted white with non-toxic (animal safe) paint? It will only be the outer part, so while she’s in the cage she won’t be able to see or touch it, but I’m worried if she chews on it while outside of the cage. The main reason I want to do this is to make the cage match the rest of my room’s theme, but I will definitely not do it if it is unsafe.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.  -L

As many things in your room (I am sure) are already painted, it should be fine to paint the outside of the cage. You can use a plant-based safe paint, and make sure to paint it several days before your rabbit’s arrival so any fumes can dissipate. If she shows interest in chewing the paint, you can use vinegar on the cage as a deterrent.
