        Hey there.
My rabbit Roxanne has red spots in the urine. Today is the 4th day, and red is getting darker. She has done this before, the last 2 years in a row. it’s almost becoming a ritual: twice a year blood. Once in the winter / spring and once in the fall. This time around her behavior is normal and she still has a good appetite.
When I have taken her to the vet they are eager to say it’s a UTI or calcium build up. But have never had a conclusive confimation in tests. Eveything else always checks out normal. I want to find out if this her normal body cycle thru the year. And maybe not have to take her to the vet twice a year for this.
I’m curious if anyone has had similar situation with their rabbits. She is not spayed.
Could this be her period? Or heat?
Is it normal for rabbits to have UTI twice a year? (like the vet said)

I have held off taking her to the vet because she is not showing any other abnormal symptoms.
Of course I will take her if I dont find any other cause from this forum.
So please hold urgencies, share your knowledge please!

I moved your thread to a more appropriate section. I was afraid no one would see it in the Welcome section.

Is the pee uniformly red? Or are there streaks/blobs of red within normal looking pee? The reason I ask is because red pee does not equal blood. Red pee can actually be quite normal.

            Thanks for moving it!
the pee is normal looking with red streaks/ blobs in it. Its so odd this continues to happen so frequent. I dont think its blood either.

            what makes red pee “normal”?

Rabbits can have spontaneous red pee, but it is generally caused by plant pigments. Dark leafy greens are the most common culprit. Red pee is not harmful. It’s perfectly normal. However, this red pee is tinted red throughout.

If it is clear/yellow pee with red blobs or streaks in it, then that is concerning. How old is she? Is she spayed? Blood in urine typically does not originate from the urinary tract, but from the uterus instead.

Her pee is clear with red spots that appear on her litter.
She is almost 5 and not spay.
Rabbiys don’t show this as a symptom in heat. And as red pee may be common, it isn’t all red.
I give her an herbal blend of things including hibiscus, but that is new and wouldn’t explain it’s continuation.

Unspayed rabbit can get uterine cancer at age 4, I would definitely take her to the vet just in case. I don’t know if that in one of the symptoms of uterine cancer but I would definitely take her to the vet. You should spay her as soon as you can before she gets it, if you Google around you may just find the problem.

Hazelbunny is correct and this is what I was getting at. If she is 5 years old and not spayed, the blood is likely coming from her uterus and not her urinary tract. She likely has a tumor or an infection. Both of these conditions can produce a discharge that is on and off. I would have a vet look there for the source of the problem. This is something we see often on BB.

                      thank you all!
yes, Hazelbunny, and LBJ10 you were correct. Little Roxannes uterus is inflamed causing infections. Shes on meds and feeling much hoppier now. No growths or stones but we need to do a spay. She will hate me forever.

Oh good! I’m glad the vet figured out what the problem is. She may not like getting spayed, but it really is the best thing for her.
