I was trimming Thumper’s nails after work today and I noticed that it looks like one of her nails is bent in the wrong direction. Is there a way to fix that without cutting off the nail? On another note, I have never seen Thumper stay outside of her room this long. I felt like I had to give her an extra litter box.

Is the finger itself okay? If the bent part is beyond the quick, I think clipping it is fine.

If it’s within the quick, I’d have a vet look at it or call and ask consult. I’ve never run into this before myself!

I agree with Wick, make sure it’s just a nail injury and not a toe injury. It isn’t unusual for a nail to split, but not bleed. The injury will go unnoticed for awhile until the split portion of the nail starts to separate. Often times, this outer “sheath” of nail will completely fall off, leaving a little nub behind. Although it never bleeds, the nub can be somewhat sensitive since the nerves are there.

If the nail is torn out by the “root”, then that’s a different story. That will bleed and it’s usually pretty obvious right away.

Just wanted to add: My Bam has a nail that’s bent the wrong way. He’s had it since I got him 6 years ago, so I’ve no idea how it happened. He’s never seemed the least bit bothered by it.

Oh, good point Bam, I was assuming this was something new. Could it possibly be an old toe injury that has healed like that?

I believe Thumper has had it before I got her, I saw it when I trimmed her nails last month but convinced myself I was seeing things. I saw it again and couldn’t rationalize that I was just rotating the nail a bit. She isn’t showing any signs of discomfort from it. That I can see at least.

It sounds like I can put having it looked at off until her next check up but if you guys recommend seeing a vet I will make the time.

Well, if it’s been there all this time, I don’t think it will really matter. I would just ask the next time you’re at the vet.
