I gave baby bun (3 month old) Oxbow Young Rabbit Essentials but she doesn’t like it even though I’ve been transitioning her over the last 2 weeks. It smells pretty bad to me too.

Can I feed the Oxbow adult rabbit food to her?

I found a box of Nibblers food and here are the ingredients and she seems to be happy to eat it:

Pollard, Lucerne, Rice Bran, Soyabean Meal, Bentonite, Vitamins C, A, D, E and K, Minerals, Sunflower Oil, Canola Oil, Limestone, Dicalcium Phosphate, Amino Acids.”

I wonder if it is ok?

Otherwise any other pellet recommendations for Aussies? I couldn’t find any good food here.

        Cheers!

From experience, your rabbit can survive and grow on adult Oxbow early on. Wick was switched very early because of the excess calcium which came from the young pellets. This may however contributed to his period of being underweight, which was amended after a week of cc feeding.

The preference should still be young pellets, since it is dense in the nutrients young rabbits require while growing! Wick did not like going from his alfalfa pellets to Timothy, but after a bit he goes crazy for it now. It can take some time, and if you’ve already bought the bag, maybe try and see if the taste gets better tolerated. Also just ensure the Pellets are dry and solid. You said it smelled, so if it’s wet or moldy obviously toss it! Pellets do have a strong smell.

Feeding adult food won’t hurt anything. If your bunny will eat alfalfa hay, you can always supplement that way.

I’m having a similar problem. Trying to switch Sam from previous owner’s bunnyjunk pellets for adult rabbits onto Oxbow young rabbit (he’s only 3 months old!). Not having any luck – I’ve tried mixing them together but he picks out the old ones & leaves the Oxbow every time. Any tips on switching foods @Wick?

Heaven, try giving the pellet mix often but in small amounts. So give a tablespoon of each, and don’t top up until he’s eaten them all. Often if there’s a whole bowlful they’ll just pick around the ones they don’t like.

My bunny didn’t like being switched at all. For about a week he determinedly picked out the old pellets, but as soon as I gave him a smaller amount, he realised he actually liked the new ones better and began picking around the old pellets and only eating the new.

Thank you, great advice! I gave him a small amount earlier today and I caught him sniffing/nibbling at them! Will see how he goes tomorrow.

Thanks … maybe it’s like human kids turning their nose up at healthy veges

A smaller amount may be the way to go … she’d eat most of the mix including the breeder’s pellets and the oxbow ones but she really seemed uninterested when I’d hand feed her individual oxbow pellets and more interested in the Nibbler’s. And this one went on for about a week and a half to two weeks. In any case she seems to be growing very fast.

I think I’ll stick to the Nibblers for now as it’s also a high fibre content and switch her to the Oxbow adult after a bit …

                    Cheers …
