Does it have to be gradual or can one switch it up straight away?

I switched Minty from meadow to oaten as I’m allergic and she was so uninterested she started to eat her carefresh litter.

Anyone have problems with meadow hay and found another hay to be better?

        Cheers!

I use a mix of meadow and orchard for all of my animals, and they love that. I don’t find it to be particularly dusty, however it likely depends where you purchase it.
Oat hay is typically well received by rabbits—rather odd that she shows no interest. I would give her that hay cold turkey for a reasonable amount of time, you want to be careful she’s still eating hay for obvious health reasons.
You could try different cuts of the same hay, or even purchasing from a feed store or other horse supply store—many have super fresh hay!

thank you … I guess switching cold turkey is all good.

will try orchard grass and maybe timothy but I don’t think we get it here in AUS!

I know she loves meadow …

The oaten doesn’t look so fresh, maybe that’s why.

Yes, switching between grass hays is fine. And a lot of bbers have had success with allergies and Orchard Grass. And a lot of buns (including mine) really love it.

Meadow hay is practically always a mix of grasses, and they all have some timothy. It’s likely the timothy you’re reacting to, it’s known to cause allergic flare-ups in humans. I can’t use it or I cough and cough endelessly. So my Bam gets orchard and oat. Orchard is nice, it’s not dusty, at least not Oxbow orchard.

Switching brands could help too. Each brand grows their hay in a different place, so there’s different pollen and dust particles adhered to the hay. Myself and Wick sneezed a lot with Kaytee timothy hay, but not with Oxbow.

I’m not allergic to timothy per se, but when I get a batch that has a lot of dust in it (like a couple of bags that I bought at Pet Supplies Plus last fall), it definitely makes one sneeze. I find that closing the lid of a storage bin and giving it a good shaking does help settle the dust some to the bottom of the bin.
