I recently got 2 male mini lop bunnies almost 3 weeks ago. One of them passed away recently. The vet says it may or may not have been due to calicivirus. The other bunny now isn’t acting like himself. He still eats but not a lot like he used to. He doesn’t jump or run to me or anyone like he used to. He has a very curious nature and is quite adventurous but not since his brother passed away. They grew up together and i’m assuming they are quite close. He never saw the body as we rushed him to the vet where they put him down. I’m not sure whether he is confused or coming to realisation that his friend is never coming back… we also took him for a calicivirus vaccination yesterday and today he is very lethargic, not active, not excited and doesn’t hop around like he used to. The vet said yesterday he was healthy but today his behaviour has change quite a bit. Could it be because of the side effects of the vaccine? His poo is normal during the day but this morning I found a lot of cecotrophes or ‘night faeces’. What could be going wrong with my bunny? Should we get him another companion? Is there anything we can do to relieve some of the pain?

It is likly that he is mourning his companion, but since he was exposed to the virus and his behavior changed suddenly I would contact your vet again, as it could be both grieving and illness.

Is he still eating and pooping OK? Sometimes medication will cause bunnies not to eat their cecals, so its possible the vaccine did the same thing.

          So yeah, contact the vet.

Eventually he would probably like a companion, but make sure his health is stable first. In the meantime, you can spend extra time with him, and get him a “stuffy” to snuggle with. Just be sure to supervise time with the stuffy in case they decide to chew on it.

            Hi DanaNM,

He’s actually acting a lot like himself today. Yesterday he was very hot, perhaps due to the vaccine, he may have gotten a little sick. But today he has cooled off and he is hopping around a lot more. He is eating and drinking like usual. This time he pooped fine and he ate his cecals. Although, he still does seem like he misses his companion… I like the idea of a “stuffy” to snuggle with, that’s a good idea! Thank you! We may wait a while on finding him a partner as you’re right, we want to make sure his health is in check first
