        Hi,

New to this forum! Myself and my girlfriend have a 4 month old rabbit. I’m sorry I don’t know the breed. We both love him very much and he lives in the house with us. We’ve been trying to bond with him for ages, sitting in his room trying to go lay with him etc. He has loads of space and literally ever toy going! So far he’s been getting on ok, he definitely thinks he’s boss and if we sit down comes and nudges us to get out of the way (I think, it’s so hard to tell!). We had him neutered a couple of weeks ago.

Anyway today we went into the room where he’s kept and he’d managed to scrunch up the mat in front of his door so we had to really push to get the door open which caused lots of noise. He’s gone into his hutch and now is inconsolable, he just keeps thumping whenever we come near or speak to him. He doesn’t particularly like being touched ever so I’m at a loss to how to comfort him. Do we just have to leave him be for a while?

        Thanks for your help,

        Ollie and Nat

Giving him a small treat to get him back to feeling secure may help. If your general presence seems too intimidating, I’d say come back in 10minutes gently and try a treat again. Rabbits just need positive feedback for spooks.

When my bunnies get spooked, I just crouch down/sit down with them and talk to them calmly saying “it’s okay babies, nothing is here to hurt you” Of course they have no clue what I’m saying but I think the tone is reassuring to them. As Wick said, offering a treat will often help them too. If he won’t come out to take the treat, I’d just place it near him so he can eat at his leisure.

I pet my bunnies too but as yours isn’t keen on being touched, I wouldn’t just yet. Perhaps you could just sit in the room and keep talking to him?

Thank you very much for your replies. Tried talking but every time we did he thumped… just left some treats and came back in. He’s still off but at least he’s not running in his cage. We thought he’d like being touched a little bit by now as we’ve had him for 2 months and have integrated as much as possible. Patience I guess!

              Thanks again

I agree with Sarah and Wick- a treat should help him feel better ☺. I’m not clear on whether you had to force the door to the room he was in- if so, he couldn’t have been injured, could be? As long as he’s not hurt, I’m sure he will recover just fine, given a little time and a treat or three. My Lukie is rather high strung to put it mildly, and becomes terrified at least once a day on average. A treat is always required, and whether or not I am allowed to comfort him depends on if I was involved in whatever frightened him.

You sound like great bunny parents- very caring ☺. This is an awesome site to learn, ask advice, and discuss your bunny with other rabbit-obsessed people.
