My rabbit, Blossom is nearly a year old now and is usually very confident and inquisitive. A few weeks ago, I was eating a bowl of spaghetti and she came to cuddle next to me on the sofa as usual but just as I had a forkful of spaghetti, she darted off and hid. The pasta was plain and since then Ive shown her strands of it as Ive been eating in hope she would see it wasnt scary, however every time she runs away, even if Ive been cooking and the smell of pasta is on my hands she still gets frightened by it. I never saw this in my previous rabbit, Rosie and wondered if anyone else had seen this reaction in their bunny or had an idea why it might scare her so much?

Hi! First, she is an adorable tiny ball of cuteness! Second, some buns are sensitive to certain cooking smells, and she might just not like the smell of pasta for some reason.

Too cute! Luna is right, some rabbits are suspicious of certain human foods. Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it doesn’t. Olaf always runs from meat-based dishes and anything that smells too savory or pungent. It could be that Blossom doesn’t know what the spaghetti is and decides to use her bunny instincts to flee. Some rabbits don’t like the smell of any human food, others will try to gobble up anything! I think it’s just a personal preference so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Oh what a gorgeous girl Blossom is!

It’s probably just because it’s a smell that she’s unsure of. My Peanut used to get edgy when I was cooking something garlicky.

I wonder if she instinctively thought it looked like roundworms? Which would be very dangerous to a bunny…. but of course spaghetti is not!

Raccoon roundworm (which is deadly to rabbits) is about as large as a number 2 pencil…. so it’s quite possible she had a gut reaction to it! No pun intended!

I also recall seeing my dog’s roundworms as a child…. and they looked like moving spaghetti. YUCK.

This is on the top of my brain because one of my labmates just published a paper on animal behavior in response to fear of parasites: http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2018/01/raccoon-latrines-could-have-hidden-impact-ecosystems

Spaghetti doesn’t fit in her low-carb diet

All kidding aside, it could be what Dana suggests, like a conditioned response to something they perceive as a potential threat? Or she could just not like it. I cook a lot, and I cook like ALL kind of stuff. Ophelia used to run and hide every time I was in the kitchen cooking, but she has gotten used to it. And now she comes over and just begs for whatever veggies I happen to be working with…. of course, I obliged because it was too darn cute. But now it’s her expectation that coming in the kitchen while I’m cooking means she is getting a snack lol

You’re very lucky. I have the opposite problem: I have to wrestle to get the rabbit out of my pasta bowl.

Hi everyone! Thank you all for your help, I was really curious to why she might have this reaction! At least I can rest easy knowing everythings okay : )
