Bunny gas

My bunny Olaf is almost 3 and has the most sensitive stomach. I tried a new food for him and he got very bad diarrhea so I took him to the vet and she examined him and said he okay and gave me metradiazole for him. Now his stomach has been making this gurgling sound quiet often and I’m really worried about what to do for him.

Stomach gurgling, as you know is usually gas build up. This usually comes from what can be a combo or single cause of a disagreeing food and/or poor hay consumption. The other is antibiotics/meds, but Olaf wasn’t on them it seems until after this started.

If you find a bad gas reaction to a new food, you need to stop giving that food. While there are rabbit safe items, each rabbit will have it’s own sensitivity. For example, Wick gets diarrhea after a pinky sized piece of cucumber. He also pees like a continuous waterfall when he eats parsley.

You should go back to a basic diet for him until his stomach settles down. Stick to limited pellets, unlimited hay, and just one or two veggies you know he takes well. The most common and safe is romaine lettuce. You also need to make sure he’s eating hay so he fibers help everything pass through.

Don’t worry about lack of vegetable variety. Wick only gets romaine!

Simethicone, aka baby gas drops, can also help minor gas episodes that aren’t linked to a severe medical problem or condition. You can find this in any local pharmacy or drug store usually. Typically if two to three doses over a couple hours show no difference, it won’t help. After one dose though, sometimes that will be enough to help.
