I’m a little worried because my rabbit seems to be breathing a little harder and louder than usual. I can hear her breathing from a few feet away which is a little unusual because she’s typically not that loud of a breather. She was not running around beforehand so I know that it’s not from any high activity.

She is currently flopped out on her stomach and looks relaxed despite the kind of loud breathing. She doesn’t seem to be in any distress. She is grooming herself and asking for lots of pats. I don’t know if I am worrying about nothing. Earlier today she gave me quite a fright because she was completely flopped sideways with her eyes open but she wasn’t moving at all! I thought she was sick or dying! She has gotten up since though and has been exploring around my room, chewing on paper, and flopping. It’s just the heavy occasional loud breathing that is worrying me.

Does anyone know if this is normal? What’s going on?

There could be build up in her lungs due to nasal discharge or a respiratory infection. Since this is new to her, I advise seeing a rabbit vet.

How loud is she breathing? Does it sound more like a soft squeak or a loud snore? And it is accompanied by any sneezing or nasal discharge?

She may have a URI, but she also could just be snoring. Lops have squished up faces (kindof the rabbit equivalent of bulldogs) so they are more prone to snoring/squeaking than other breeds. Thor does snore sometimes, it sounds like a soft wheeze and I can hear it from a few feet away. I wouldn’t call it LOUD though, just loud for a rabbit. To be safe, we did check with the vet about it at our last appointment. If you are concerned I would bring her in for a checkup!

Also, ha the “dead bunny flop” has gotten many an owner. Flopping totally on their side is the sign of a happy, blissed out rabbit
