You can’t just put rabbits together like cats and dogs. You need to go through a whole bonding process with them. First you need to let the new bun settle in so she’s no stressed. If she’s not fixed, that’s the first thing you need to do is get her spayed. If she is spayed you still need a month to let her settle and do prebonding by keeping them separated at all times and switching their items between cages. After 1-2 months of this you can begin sessions in neutral territory. The male is humping to establish his dominance, and if she’s unspayed he is also likely doing it because a hormonal bun can make a fixed bun act out.

I should have more specific..they weren’t just thrown into this with out any time together.they have been in the same room but it’s been divided by a fence..she is still super young they why she hasnt been spayed yet. But the dominance thing makes sence. Obviously once the female is old enough she will get spayed.just didn’t know if there was something I could do in the mean time to help with the whole humping thing.

Assuming the female is spayed and enough time has passed that her hormones have disipated, it’s likely your male is mounting to assert dominance. It’s totally normal. Having said that, if your doe hasn’t yet been spayed he could be smelling her hormones and reacting to that.

Oh just thought I’d also mention, even a neutered male and a spayed female can sometimes act a little hormonal, particularly during season changes. They can also mount when excited. My boy used to show a little interest in my female’s butt when he was particularly excited and energetic (binkying and whatnot)

Rabbits can also exhibit mounting behavior while coming to terms with major life changes. Back several months ago, Panda would mount Fernando almost every day; this was, as my foster mother explained, a reaction to both having to deal with having her other three kits adopted away and also moving to a new home (with me), so she was looking to reassure herself of her status in her bond with her remaining kit (Fernando). She does it far less frequently nowadays, though I’ll still see this behavior being exhibited every once in a while.
