Hey there! My name is Taylor. I am 24. I live in Maine with my boyfriend, dog and of course my bunny, Sophie! Back in November I rescued Sophie  from a woman I work with who isn’t animal savvy whatsoever. She got Sophie for her young son who lost interest after awhile. So Sophie was put on the back burner. She was kept in a large wire dog cage, in the basement. Kept by the bulkhead all year round. SO of course it was freezing down there in the winter. No shavings, little to no hay. No bedding. it was just lined with newspaper. Dirty water and food dish. When the woman asked if I’d help re home her I agreed. That was before I knew what conditions she was kept in. When I went to pick her up i was appalled. I packed her up and drove to my parents so my mother could help me cut her nails. Which we an INCH long! I didn’t even know rabbits nails could grow that long! I’d had bunnies growing up. They were kept in the barn in hutches with the horses and goats but we always gave them the care they needed and cut their nails. I was horrified. My mother and I cried for her. Sophie had bit me when I first met her that day but she laid in my mothers arms so quietly while i clipped her nails. She knew we were trying to help. After that I took her back to my apartment and set up a big pen for her with a litterbox, toys, treats, a little tent with a bed in it. She has full run of the spare room when I am home. She’s only in her pen when we are sleeping or at work. Within a week she started to come to the edge of her pen when I would walk into the room so I could lean down and pat her. No more biting! She and my cockerpoo have become fast friends! They play together and eat together. She was supposed to be temporary as I wasn’t looking to get a bunny. I was just going to work with her and then find her a nice home. But, alas I have fallen for her and it would kill my dog if he lost his friend.

Sorry for the long story. I hope I can learn a thing or two from everyone here and get to see some cute bunnies! <3

What a loving story. Witnessing neglectful conditions is so heart breaking, and your willingness to nurture a defensive rabbit is wonderful.

How is her hay appetite now, and have you had her examined by a rabbit experienced vet? I wonder if she’s spayed, and I also wonder how her teeth are considering her poor diet.
