Hello everyone! This blog has been super helpful in teaching me what to expect with my first bunny. Pablo is an 9 week old dwarf Holland lop. I’ve had him for 2 weeks and he has been super lovable. He enjoys laying on me and being pet but a day or so ago he began scratching at my chest like he is digging and biting at me. I haven’t had him long but it’s out of character. Is it just a phase he will grow out of it should I do something to stop it? Thanks in advance!

Most buns like to scratch and dig. It’s not uncommon. A lot of them dig at you for attention. I think may members here have this problem, myself included. My boys dig at me when I stop giving them pets or if I don’t give them more than one treat. It’s a compliment ?

Also, sometimes rabbits dig and “smooth out” places where they want to get cozy and lie down (or pee on). It’s them making a little nook so they feel cozy. Wick does this on my chest when he lays there to sleep and on my bed.

Peanut digs at Buttercup if she’s in his way. He also digs at me if I’m in his way. He’s a very paws-on bunny rather than a nippy one lol. In normal circumstances tho, bunnies just naturally enjoy digging and pulling at fabrics and whatnot. You could put some fleece blankets down in a corner to see if he’ll dig there?

Is he actually biting at you (breaking skin, drawing blood) or is he just nipping you? Rabbits very rarely bite unless something’s majorly wrong, but they nip a LOT – it’s one of their basic means of communication, usually when they want to emphasize something they’re trying to tell you. Case in point; as I posted earlier this week, my Fernando (the white bun in my avatar) has been nipping and pawing at my white T-shirt/undershirt during evening floor sessions. It’s pretty certain that it’s a combination of his wanting some attention (petting, being talked to, etc.) and telling me to get out of his way while he tries to find a way out of the X-pen.

Does it look anything like this?  If so, it’s love and “I missed you, let me show you how much!”  Hope this link works….

Thanks so much everyone! He’s not breaking skin or anything, just like he’s trying to dig a hole or something! Just trying to make sure I’m doing everything I can for my new little guy

Pabito, do me a favor and watch the link I posted? (If the flaming thing works….Technology hates me.) I’m curious if that’s what you’re experiencing. I’d hate for that to be the only rabbit who does such a thing. Thanks!
