Hello! You can call me Ziggy, as I’m not old enough to disclose my real name or age and my beautiful bunny’s name is Syd, a mini lop!

I’m a tad ashamed of myself, but Syddie is from a local pet shop, I believe she is about 1 or 2 months old. I still have to contact the pet shop to verify this as when we picked her up we were in a rush due to Christmas shopping! I would have adopted, however the only giveaways I knew of were known to have a bad temperament, and I didn’t want to push my luck too far with my lack of experience. Our local shelters didn’t have any rabbits either. Syd is an early christmas present, and I have to say probably the best one I’ve ever had!

As of posting this, it’s only my second day with my bunny, she is the first one I’ve ever had.  I have cared for guinea pigs so I’m slightly familiar with having to clean out hutches and ensuring they don’t get smelly. I have to say however, with Syd already being such a neat rabbit (so far! ) I think I won’t be going back to guinea pigs any time soon.

Syd isn’t sprayed or neutered yet as far as I am aware, I’m currently saving up to get this done and I am still looking to find local vets that specialise in rabbits and/or rodents. I’m from a country town so this is definitely proving to be a challenge.

From what I’ve seen from my bubba, she is still a tad shy, but she doesn’t hide very often unless it is behind her hutch (she free-roams around my bedroom) or its door when it’s opened. She isn’t too bad with marking areas other than around her hutch, as I always chuck her poop back into her hutch. She is fine with affection and handling now, and hopefully will be less inclined to back off when we go to give her scratches and pets, but she is relatively calm when being held (doesn’t squirm). Syd will now even run up every now and then to give my feet a nudge when I’m sitting, or she’ll prop her tiny paws onto my legs if I’m on the ground with her. She doesn’t play with her toys too much, as she’s too busy running and jumping around the room, however she does have an funny interest in the wicker basket in my room I gave her. Syd often rises to her back legs, it’s quite cute watching her slowly go backwards before regaining her balance. She loves to sleep, and is always dozing off behind her hutch instead of actually sleeping in it, which never fails to make me smile. She’s very curious, is always munching on her hay and loves carrots! (Although I quickly learnt that she couldn’t have too much today, after she produced some Cecotropes I quickly took away the piece I had left in her cage. Just another learning opportunity

Everyday with Syd is an opportunity for me to learn and fully appreciate what wonderful, hilarious and curious creatures rabbits truly are! I’m keen for the many years ahead of this beautiful girl.
(Sorry for the large images! I took them on my phone and had to use the fill light flash feature, I tried cropping them as much as possible!)

Her ears are slowly beginning to flop I think!

Here she is hiding behind her hutch. She must consider it a safe spot because it is cramped? No idea.

I’m completely new to rabbits. I’ve been researching like crazy, and even created a daily/monthly schedule so I don’t forget something with this scatterbrain of mine. I have handled rabbits briefly due to my cousin being rabbit mad, especially with lops.

I was initially going to adopt a rabbit from a school friend, however the large size of the rabbit and its temperament weren’t going to mix well with my budget and inexperience. I wish I could have gotten a more suitable rabbit (such as Syd) from a local shelter but unfortunately the ones where I live only house dogs and cats!  However, I haven’t looked back once in these whopping 2 days lol.

I have an interest in animals, I will actually start volunteering once I am old enough (this month!) so I am very, very excited to contribute. I’m interested in photography and writing, just to name a few of my hobbies. I love TV shows and anime, although I really need to catch up on some series lol.

I’m keen to be apart of this community after some lurking, it is so informative and most of all welcoming!

Well Ziggy A very big welcome to you both.
Thank you for all your information. Syd sounds like a very lucky bunny, give her a few days to settle in and she’ll come out of her hideyhole.
Just rememebr she must eat and have something to eat at all times (hay).

I hope she is atleast 2 moths old, becuase one month is really far too young to be weaned from her mum.

Keep up with the photos. She is lovely !!!

Thank you! I’ve laid her cage out with hay so she always has that to munch on, as with a local mix. I believe she would be 2 months then.

Have you put hay all over the bottom of her cage? Because actually you dont need to and this will even encourage her to go to the toilet anywhere in the cage and not in one particular spot (like a litter tray!!). You can put nice clean hay in a heavy bowl or in a rack for her. Kept separate from any hay she may use to go to the toilet of course.

This saves on cleaning and on hay !!
