Something is up with my bunny. Suddenly he is not pooping as much. Yesterday I noticed less droppings and the ones that were there were getting smaller and smaller. Today is the most worrying because I saw those glossy clusters of tiny black poop clumped together. I don’t know really what could be wrong. I haven’t put him in any kind of stress lately. He is still active but maybe not as much. He eats his hay and drinks plenty of water. But I have also noticed that he chews on carpet. I have a carpet that has stringy tassels at the end of it and he eats those tassels. Other than that I don’t know what else could be affecting him.

Grape poops are cecals and cecals are the poops that bunnies must eat. Usually, you don’t see them unless the bun is young and their tummies are still developing or if their diet is too rich. What do you feed your bun?

I mentioned on your other thread that you really need to stop your bun getting access to the tassels. They could clump or get tangled up in his tummy and cause a fatal blockage.

Yes, after I read that reply I was super careful and I haven’t been letting out any things with threads or tassels or anything unchewable in his way. I feed him an alfalfa chew stick that’s about the length of a finger and the width of a stick of gum. I give him a handful of Oxbow alfalfa pellets and one Oxbow carrot and dill baked treat. An occasional sprinkle of oats each day. And of course hay and water. My bunny is four months old so he is pretty young. Am i giving him way to many treats and extra things? What’s wrong here?

              That’s good

I would think the alfalfa chew stick and the alfalfa pellets are okay but I would cut out the oats. What type of hay do you give? If you’re giving alfalfa hay AND alfalfa pellets, it might be too much alfalfa for your little one.

Oh no he turned his nose up at alflalfa hay when I tried to give it to him. He eats Timothy hay. For the oats this lady at the pet store I got him from said that oats are good at stopping wetail for rabbits. She said to sprinkle it in every day when he eats. But you are right. I don’t think oats are very good for him. I will take those out.

Timothy Hay and alfalfa pellets shouldn’t be too rich a combo so it probably is the oats. If cutting those out don’t help tho, try cutting out the Oxbow baked treat (though I can’t imagine one of those a day would cause many problems) I’m not sure about oats stopping wet tail but defo try skipping them and see what happens

Definitely cutting the oats. He seems better. The poop is solid and round now. Only problem is there isn’t a lot of it like normal.

You are sure it is blood, and not maybe some dark-orange pee (it can sometimes mistakenly look like blood at a glance) that got on his poop? If you are certain it is blood, take him to the vet immediately. Sorry, I don’t have any experience with this so I can’t think of any other suggestions. I do hope he is ok.

It’s not pee. Nope. The thing is he is so active right now! He’s still running around and eating! The red coloring isn’t dripping or liquid like on his poop. It’s mixed in and dry.

Definitely needs a vet if it is blood. Maybe take some of the poop samples so that the vet can look at them. Does anything in his poop look like part of those tassels he chews on?

No. I gave him a couple pieces of freeze dried strawberries today and those are dark red. Could those be what is causing it? I don’t know how to tell if it is actually blood. My dad said it doesn’t look like it’s blood and might just be something he ate. He’s a human doctor but i don’t know if his knowledge applies to rabbits or not. He said if it was blood it would be liquid blood in the area where he pooped.

It could be the strawberries. Don’t give anymore and monitor the poop.

I think your Dad is probably right. My little Bridge bun started to get blood with his poop. It was like a gelatinous red blob that would come out with the poop. He ended up having GI cancer.

Awww I’m truly sorry to hear that. Aw that’s so sad. Atleast you know that you took good care of him and gave him a good life even if he ended up having that. The poop is now normal. He eats behaves and poops just like normal. The strange thing is that I give those to him everyday. Maybe that’s why. I might have given them to often .
