I’m having a hard time feeling like I’m spending quality time with my rabbit, Freddie. I moved to Philly a few months ago. My room here is super small and hard for me to find a good space for him to play. Back at home in MD my whole room was bunny-proofed and I let my rabbit Bean (who my parents kept, and who still lives in my old room haha) run around the room all day, regardless of whether I was home.

I don’t like giving Freddie run of my whole room because there are wires he can get to (much as I’ve tried to cover them), and a lot of my room is the space under my bed. I don’t like him going under there cause I don’t know what he’s chewing/getting into. I have an ex pen for him that was working great until he learned he could jump to the top of his cage and I found him on my bed eating ramen noodles! I took apart the pen and blocked out part of the room so he could have more space, but he still got to a wire once (my fault) and one day when I left him out I found some blood in his cage (I called the vet, he seems okay, but it was scary!). I’m feeling like a terrible bunny parent! I’ve been keeping him in his cage the past few days to keep him out of harm’s way and let him recuperate from whatever happened.

I think I might be able to get the ex pen to work again if I prop his cage open so he can’t jump on top of it. The pen is also big, though, and makes it hard for me to move around my tiny room. Plus, I work 9-5, sometimes longer, so can’t easily check on/bond with him throughout the day.

How do all you working bunny parents bond with your rabbits? I want to feel like Freddie’s getting what he needs from me, and that I’m keeping him safe.

Definitely add the pen back and find a way so he cant get on top of his cage. He needs proper exercise to be healthy and its hard for a bun to do that in a cage.

To bond with him, spend extra time with him. Lay around or sit by him and read him a book, or just talk to him about your day. Hand feed pellets and greens, and offer some treats now and again
