        Hi everyone

So a quick one: can I use a limestone or travertine (which is a natural derivative of limestone) slab in my buns space?

        Anything unsafe about it?

        Thanks

Ps would appreciate a fast reply I’m going to the garden store in a short while.

I have no idea based on any personal history with the product but I do know that limestone is primarily made of calcium and it is suggested that rabbits avoid diets high in calcium. If the limestone is smooth and treated in such a way that the rabbit cannot dig its teeth in then maybe it won’t bother messing with it, however if you are worried that it will be nibbling a bit, then maybe passing on it might be best for bun.

Ah I see i didn’t know that about the calcium, thanks. I’ll see what other materials they have then.

Limestone, travertine (and marble) are all calcium carbonate stones, and even if the surface is made so that the bun can’t chew the stone (although with travertine a bun would be able to stick its teeth into the little holes regardless of the surface), these types of stone are brittle and dont withstand dirt well at all. You can’t clean it with vinegar and water because vinegar dissolves calcium.

Granite would work, although it’d be very expensive. And probably not very nice for the bun to live on.

Oh no bam, little misunderstanding, it’s not for his flooring it’s literally just having the one tile in the corner haha. For asthetics as well as practicality, I’ll place it under his hay rack because he loves digging up the fleece in that one space.

So for just 1 tile… what do we think?

Oh ok! Then I’d choose a stoneware floor tile instead! Much more durable, easy to clean, no risk of the bun eating it.

I’ve come home with a porcelain tile. :/

I get so overwhelmed in the store I just choose whatever is right beside me! Is porcelain ok to use?

It has a mat finish and has good grip, so it’s not the shiny smooth type.

Ok whilst I’m here, I also got some natural “decorative” stones, the type you put on the top of flower pots. It didn’t say what type of stone they were but it did say not for aquarium use (I presume not made for underwater).

Will these be ok with fluffykins? They are big, 7 – 15cm so no chance at all of him taking one in his mouth.

Also, where do we stand on resin? Either resin ornaments he will have access to, or a resin food dish (I’ve seen a resin ‘rock’ style food dish made for reptiles but it goes so nicely with my natural theme, I’ve fallen in love with it! Would this be ok to use?

I’m not sure if resin is safe if eaten. I would hesitate to use any sort of cage furniture made for a reptile for a rabbit – reptiles just don’t chew like rabbits, and products for them are made accordingly (I have a few small reptiles in addition to my bun). In addition, keep in mind that dishes for reptiles are usually rather lightweight, to avoid crushing delicate herps, so depending on the one you choose, your bunny may choose to throw it. If your rabbit isn’t a heavy chewer or a thrower, that might not be a problem.

I have no idea about resin, but porcelain is great. It’s high-fired so it’s not porous.

Oh wonderful about porcelain, thank you!

I’ll be at the vet for injections tomorrow so I’ll ask there about resin and see if anyone knows anything. This is very interesting!

Overthinking, mine doesn’t really throw his bowls around. He currently has a heavy ceremac one I use for pellets and a very lightweight cheap plastic one for veggies.

He is a chewer! Hasn’t tried to chomp on the plastic one though but I’ve seen him biting his cage bars. I’ve got a million (a million I tell you, a million)! wooden toys and furniture dotted around so thankfully he takes out his chewiness on those.

Anyone have any ideas on the stones? Are all natural stones just safe for buns? These aren’t soft btw and they don’t look porous but they might be.

I can’t see how a large stone could be dangerous in any way. A small stone could be choked on, but if its too big to get in his mouth I can’t see any danger.
