Hi! I have 2 rabbits that I introduced to eachother a week ago. We split our apartment in half with ex pens and baby gates so that they can see eachother but can not touch. We are swapping them over sides everyday. If I have to go away for 1 night I want to shut a door between them in case one decided to jump the gate with no one home. They haven’t seemed to want to jump it but they do try to pull on gate. It would just help me feel at ease knowing they have no way in harming eachother. My sister lives in an apartment above me so she would be in to feed and give them some attention.
My question is will shutting a door between them for 24 hours take us backwards in our bonding process? Since they normally can see eachother if they want. Please let me know. Thank you!

Nope, it won’t erase all the hard work don’t worry It’s very wise to do that actually!

I too think it’s wise. They will still know the other rabbit is in the other room. The most important thing in this situation is of course to prevent injuries. Injuries could stop their bonding from ever happening.

You’re doing it exactly right. During the bonding process, rabbits need to be kept separated from one another when they’re not in actual bonding sessions so that they don’t get on one another’s nerves and get in serious fights that could wreck the whole thing due to injuries and grudges (rabbits are really good at holding grudges). The best idea is to keep them out of physical reach of one another so they can’t reach out to bite one another, which means their habitats should be kept separate by at least far enough to prevent them from reaching their prospective bondmate by pushing their faces through the gaps. You do want to enable them to get used to one another’s presence and relax in each other’s presence, so they should be able to sense (see, hear, or smell) one another even when they’re being kept at a distance in between bonding sessions.
