Hi ! Im looking for to an air purifier to put in my room. There is a “bunny” smell that I cant get rid of and i also have allergies. I dont really want to spend hundreds of dollars on one. But im looking for suggestions on the best air purifiers out there.
I share a room with my bunny Quinn and she is an unspayed female. Shes only 8 weeks old and I really do think one would be helpful !

It might be her hormones changing the way her pee smells. I don’t have any purifier recommendations but I do want to suggest a super cheap thing to try. Put a bowl of vinegar or 2 somewhere in the room, well out of her reach. It is supposed to absorb odours from the air. That obviously won’t help with allergies though., sorry.

The topic of purifiers has come up on the forum many times in the past. Unfortunately, the forum search feature is not working at the moment. You can look at some past threads on the topic here if that helps.

I know that I’ve read you shouldn’t use air purifiers with ionization if you have a rabbit. I’m not sure why ionization is dangerous or bad for rabbits, but it apparently is. I have never used an air purifier, but to see which ones are best, you can do a Google search on best rated ones, or go to Amazon and look for them, choosing the ones that get 4 stars or higher ratings, and compare the prices.

A splash of apple cider vinegar raw with the mother in your rabbits water will neutralize the urine smell.

Hi, I have a rabbit and allergies (to hay and lots of other seasonal things) so I recently bought an air purifier. It just arrived so I can’t say how well it works yet but it is a compact purifier with a HEPA filter and carbon filters, for smells. It doesn’t emit ozone or use an ionizer, which are the two things to be avoided when getting an air purifer.

Hamilton Beach True Air Compact Purifier (with pet specialized air cleaner)

I’ll let you know if it makes a difference. Rabbits don’t generally have strong odor but the litter box and their hormones (pre-spay/neuter) can be strong. It may help to get a fan and open a window to first circulate the air and remove some of the odors, if possible.

Getting a brand of litter with odor control (such as Carefresh) can also help control the smell from the litterbox, which for my two buns begins to get noticeable after two days or so (I customarily empty and refill the box every two to three days and clean it every week).

Oh my goodness! I didn’t know! I have a fan at home with an ionizer feature, and sometimes I’ll turn the fan on with the ionizer turned on to get some extra air circulation for the bunnies! (it can be turned off, so that only the fan is working). Thank you for that information, I guess I won’t be turning on the ionizing feature anymore. After reading this I looked for info, but only found information about ionizers and birds. Do you know a good source for information on rabbits and ionizers?

I’m no expert but I found this article to be very helpful:

                      https://molekule.com/blog/air-purifiers-ionic-ionizers-bad-or-good/

I don’t think you need to immediately panic but it’s hard to say what amount of ionization is healthy and, therefore, most people choose to err on the side of caution. Most are safe when used as directed but definitely do some research on your own and make you own decision. It does seem nice that you can turn the ionizer feature off, so you still have a working fan.

I think the problem is not that rabbits in particular have a problem with ionizers, but that they give off ozone as a by-product.  This can be harmful to any creature in high enough quantities, but pets are vulnerable since they are low to the ground and may not go outside for fresh air.

For air purifiers for your allergies, I would suggest anything with a HEPA filter.  I use a GermGuardian brand one, but since I had it before I had my bunny, I can’t say how much it helps with the bunny specifically.  This is an affordable brand when compared with others that have a true-HEPA filter.

OverthinkingBun is right, the problem must be the ozone from your air purifier. Some may suffer from asthma attack with high exposure to ozone.
I also suggest to use the True HEPA air purifier, the price is lower today so anyone could afford it. If you need a suggestion, I would give you the list which I found my current air purifier.
