Tonight, my boyfriend let our bun out to play awhile. He hasn’t been out as often as we’d like for him to be lately due to hectic schedules and a baby on the way making me sicker than I’ve ever been.. anyway, tonight I was watching him play for the first time in months (usually it’s the boyfriend) and noticed redness under his chest! With closer inspection I realize how severe he’s loosing fur! I’ve never experienced a bun with fur loss out of all the ones I’ve had and I don’t really know what to do! He’s lost a lot of his chest fur. He’s pretty dry and I’m scared to investigate too closely in fear of hurting him! What should I do! I really feel for the poor fella):

You need to take him to the vet so that you can determine the cause of the fur loss and get appropriate treatment.

It could be mites, him plucking it out due to stress, skin problems or any number of issues. Please take him to the vet so that he can be correctly diagnosed and treated.

Try to investigate it. If the skin is red and/or crusty it could be ringworm for example. It’s not a worm, it’s a fungal infection. A photo would be really helpful.

Buns can shed in patches and loose whole chunks of fur in one go, and it’s still normal, but the skin shouldn’t be red or irritated or flaky. If the skin is irrated, sth is wrong.

I thought I had attached the picture! Oops.. he’s got a vet appointment next week, I’m hoping we can figure things out. We’ve recently moved a cat in, she doesn’t bother him, mostly just watches from a distance. I’m wondering if she’s part of the stress?

He does need to go to the vet. It’s not normal shedding. Is the skin like wet/moist?

His skin is slightly dry, not cracked or flaky. Just feels a little rougher than my own skin.

Ok that’s great! Maybe some allergy then? To some type of food or hay? Is he eating?

Wow, that’s a lot of fur loss. Poor bun. Please let us know if you’ve seen the vet.

He’s drinking and eating normal, he’s been on the same foods his entire life so I don’t think it’s that. We did some serious cleaning in, on, and in the entire room his cage is set in and he seems to be growing fur back! He still has an appointment to ensure things are okay but it really doesn’t seem to bother him like I thought it might!

My only thought is since he hasn’t been able to go out in a while, he may be pulling his fur out in frustration or severe boredom. When he’s not out, how large/small is his enclosure you keep him in?
