Rescue “Cookie” Got A New Non Fancy Cage

Cookies old cage even though we had to really do some major cleaning it had cobwebs, spiders, 3 to 4 inch deep layer of waste and pee calcium build up and we had to re wire some spots where the cage wire got damaged the cage just was not big enough for Cookie to have the proper large litter box she needed to where i could keep the feed pellet dish in one corner of it and hay in another corner of it as that also helps to train them to go in the box as well and room to run zoom around with toys and a willow twig tunnel im getting her on friday if there in stock.   Pics are of her old cage after we cleaned it and then her much bigger new cage.  Shes been slowly checking it out pushing her balls around and playing with her hanging toy alittle i also put a little stuffy in there that use to be Rosies but i washed it first. Friday when we get the twig tunnel i will also pick her up another hanging toy and maybe few other floor toys as well. I used plastic coverd cardboard to cover the corners as splash guard just incase she has a accident in the corner and not in her potty box since shes just learning the ropes of that as well once shes fully box trained i will remove the cardboard. After being in in 3 to 4 inch waste and on hard poos and plastic her feet will have to adjust to the soft coated wire thats now in there.

New bigger cage with plenty of room now .

Forgot to turn the red eye setting off on the camn Ooooops..

This should hold her over thru the winter till next spring when i will draw up some plans for a much bigger and nicer cage that hubby will build for me. Atleast shes happy now and will enjoy all that much more space to move around in.

She shouldn’t be in a wire bottom cage. That will cause pain and discomfort on her feet.

I don’t want to pile on about the no wire flooring but I think that you could really make the most of that set and add some grass mats to the flooring. I bet they would cable tie onto the floor really well. Taking the strain off her feet but also adding more stimulation.

No biggy about telling me about the wire im not mad about it, to each there own is how i see it, anyways once shes fully litter box trained i will go over on ebay see what kinda grass matts i can find and snag one up for her. The wire she has is diffrent than the wire Rosie is on Rosie’s wire is harder where as Cookie’ wire has a soft coating on it and it flexes real easy. I’ve raised rabbits on wire for many yrs with no problems but over the yrs have always provided a wood board flat in one spot to where they could get off the wire when they wanted to lay or sit with confort.  Same as our Conti’s cage she has a spot where its a board insted of wire where she can lay or sit and then wire then her hide hut is all wood.

I’m stepping in now as I know the “wire” floors will cause reactions in this community as most of us here have solid flooring.  Let’s remember to be polite and respectful even when we disagree. Plus,no one is going to make changes if they are put on the defense. 

 Wire or grid flooring doesn’t necessarily mean that the bunny will be in pain or get sore hocks.  It depends on the flexibility, the type of wire, cleanliness, size of the cage (so a bunny can lounge off his/her feet), how close together the grid is along with a list of other things -all of which we are not fully experienced in because most of us do have solid flooring. (carpet can cause sore hocks too)

  So while not ideal for many here, (including my personal preference solid flooring), I encourage members to focus on the improvements that have been made for this bunny so far.  Much better than before.  Let’s not make this into the great wire floor debate.  Bearacuda is aware and is choosing to stick with the set-up until a bigger and better one can be made. (noted after last pic).

Bearacuda – That previous cage sounds horrible as I am sure it was not good for her respiratory health either. Thank you for getting her out of that situation.  Creating a larger cleaner space with softer coating on the wire is an improvement.  I know you said you were waiting until she was litter trained to get a resting block for her.  I know there are some flat plastic pads that have some linear openings to allow urine and poos to go through, but can also allow for lounging. You may know of them already?   They may work for a while until she is litter trained and you feel more confident about solid lounging spots.

Thanks for the heads up about the colorful grid things will check into those i sorta like those.. Thats all i have to say about this subject…
