I’m new to this bunny mommy business so I have so many questions but I’ll spare you for now. The main question is, is it normal for my bun to be pooping so much?! She was laying in my lap watching Scandal with us and I swear there must have been like 20-30 poop pellets! I’ve only had her 5 days and she was definitely not eating or pooping as much as she is now. I’m glad my bun has a great appetite and is eating well but I have to be cautious with the pooping everywhere as I do have a 1.5 year old. I found myself finding poops all over like hunting for Easter eggs lol does anyone use bunny diapers loool seems like a great idea after today ?

Yes. They poop a ton. You want large, dry, spherical poos.

Ha, yes they do poop a ton! More good poops = happier healthy bunny

Even litter trained bunnies will leave a few “easter eggs” around the house. I’d say Thor poops 98% in her box and I find the odd stray poop now and again. She is uncommonly good at her litter box though. However, there are a few things that might make your current situation worse. Is she a young bunny? Young, unaltered rabbits tend to have worse litter habits than adult, fixed ones. If so, getting her spayed when she is old enough should help with poops outside the box. The other thing that comes to mind is that she just moved in (5 days), and many rabbits mark new territory with poops. These should also die down as she gets more comfortable in her environment.

How is she with her litter box?

Yes she is young only 12 weeks. I do plan to get her spayed around 5-6 months because it seems its best for their health and it can benefit their behavior as well. She is really good about using the litter pan I have inside her cage. She seems to go pee and poop 96% in there with a few errand poops scattered in the cage which I quickly gather and toss into the litter pan. I was actually surprised at how well she used the litter pan right away. Now that she’s eating more her poops are bigger and more round so that makes me happy that she’s adjusting well. I’m hoping in the future she can jump back into her cage and go in her litter pan when she has to go but she’s too small now since her cage is large and she’s a tiny little gal ❤️

Those are very likely cecotropes, or cecals. Your bunny should be eating those immediately upon production because, as gross as it sounds, those things aren’t actually poops in the sense of being waste matter; they’re actually semi-digested food which rabbits need to re-ingest in order for them to go through the digestive system again for the nutrients to be extracted. It’s a little bit like regurgitated cud in animals such as cows, except that bunnies can’t normally regurgitate/vomit. If you see your bunny in a position where his head is bent down real low to his genital/anal area, and then he’s chewing on something immediately after, he’s just produced a cecotrope and is eating it.

Yes, he does that as well. But sometimes he doesn’t eat them and they make a smelly mess.

How old is he? Younger rabbits often leave some of their cecals uneaten. It could also be a symptom of a dietary problem if he’s producing excessive cecotropes; what’s his daily diet? He should be getting unlimited grass hay (at least equal to his body volume/size daily, preferably more), accompanied by water, with at least 1 cup of leafy greens per 2 pounds of body weight and a small amount of plain timothy-based pellets (1/8 cup per 5 pounds of body weight for adults), and a small amount of treats.
