Hello! My name is Kylee, I’m new to the forum and I have a question about my rabbit shedding. My rabbit’s name is August, he is a lion head/harlequin/rex mix. He is 2 years old. Since he’s part rex, he’s got that really soft fur that just floats everywhere. I try to keep up with grooming as best I can, but I just feel like I can’t keep the shedding down. I’m afraid he is going to get impacted (he already has fur in his stool, creating those chains). Is there any food/leafy greens/etc. that I can give to help move digestion along?? He gets unlimited Timothy hay that I get from SmallPetSelect. He also gets SmallPetSelect’s pellets every other day.
Also, what does everyone use for grooming their bun?? I have a rabbit furminator, but he doesn’t like it. I have to either pull it out (gently, I don’t make him bald!) or use a lint roller.
        Thanks so much!

          Hi!
Some people believe that pineapple and papaya supplements help to break down ingested fur. If I see those string poops I normally give my buns a little piece of pineapple for a few days, but I don’t know if it actually makes a difference.

My bunnies hate being brushed, but I’ve found a good way is to stroke them with a slightly damp hand, then the loose fur sticks to your hand. I also have one of those gloves that works as a brush, but Luna will only tolerate that when she has a big pile of food.

I had a similar concern because our Harper is constantly grooming either herself or her sister. Our vet recommended giving her a little bit (1/2 teaspoon per pound of weight) of fresh pineapple twice a week to help her break down the extra ingested fur. Naturally, Harper decided she’s not a fan of pineapple, so we had to switch to papaya, but it seems to do the trick.

Thank you both very much! I will try the pineapple and see if they like it.
