Hello, my Bailey is already 2 and half years old. I just recently read about risks of developing cancer on unneutered bunnies. I talked to my vet and his concerns were that bunnies do not do well post ops psychologically and mentally and that’s were the problems starts. Does anybody has some experience with bunny being neutered at this age? I will go get seconded opinion at different/exotic animals vet, but I would love to know some other thoughts/experiences. Thank you.

Your vet may not be as experienced with spaying and rabbit surgeries as others. While spays are more risky than a neuter (for males), it is a routine operation for female rabbits. If you are proper in monitoring and caring afterwards, in addition to having a vet who’s experienced, there should be little concern.

Would you consider consulting another rabbit vet for a second opinion? There may be another around who’s more experienced and has a good post op debriefing for you.

It sounds to me like he perhaps isn’t comfortable with performing a rabbit spay. I would try and find a more experienced vet that is comfortable working on female rabbits. I personally had mine spayed very young so I’ve no direct experience but I know it can be more difficult to spay an older rabbit (more complications etc) but I’ve never heard of them reacting badly mentally.

Maybe you could reach out to a rabbit rescue and see if they have any vet reccomendations.

Sounds like hes not certified to work on rabbits. A rabbit trained vet will know how to safely preform spays and neuters. The surgery does not bother their mental state after healing.
