So I went in my bunny’s room yesterday when I got home and was shocked to see his water bottle empty (he’s never drank all of it in one day before) and a crazy amount of pee in the cage! Usually it’s a small corner, but this is almost half. He’s a year old but I’ve only had him a month and this is a first for me…I’m wracking my brain for what’s going on. I thought it may be the weather (beginning of September) or the fact that I bought him a new kind of hay? Besides that nothing is different other than the water bottle itself as his old one was leaking..

Has anybody dealt with this before?? Please help!

Lots of hydration could be from heat, compensation for eating more hay, boredom, or dental problems. The most efficient and best thing to do is a see an exotic vet to get a full check up of your new rabbit. Make sure they are legitimately experienced with rabbits. Some claim so, but make very glaring errors.

Does he eat more of the new hay than he did with the old hay? When I switched Luna’s hay from Timothy to Orchard, she ate way more of the Orchard hay than she did the Timothy hay because she likes the Orchard hay more. She also started drinking more; I think the more hay a bun eats the more water a bun will drink? It’s good that his amount of pee is in relation to the amount of water he drank. It’d be more worrisome if he was drinking a lot and hardly peeing, as opposed to drinking a lot and peeing a lot.

He is eating more hay, but I only switched hay brands, both are Timothy, I just opted for the bigger bag…
              Could that make a difference?

If he likes the new hay, he can continue to eat it. Different brands may affect how much a bun likes the hay (ie. a bun prefers Brand A over Brand B), but brands wouldn’t explain the increased drinking/peeing.

How bad was the old water bottle leaking? If it was a lot, then he might be peeing more if he is drinking more due to having more water in his new bottle.
