Mocha is my 3 month old holland lop rabbit who I love so much! I have been suffering from anxiety and depression recently and Mocha my bunny has helped me through it so much. I have been looking into getting Mocha Spayed, however I have found it to be very expensive! I found a vetenarian who will spay Mocha for 80 dollars. Mocha is a female rabbit and 80% of unspayed female rabbits develop reproductive cancer before the age of 5! Normally rabbits live between eight and twelve years!

Erm, set up a payment plan with the vet?

It’s great that you did the research to find out the pricing for the spay. There are some things you can think about.

If you have parents, relatives or others your life who you think would be willing to help, you can talk to them, explain why it’s important to you, and see if you can schedule a way to pay them back over time, if this is something your vet cannot work out.

There are some websites like GoFundMe which can post your need and people can fund it. GoFundMe specifically will take 5% of donations I believe, so you’ll want to raise your amount a little to compensate. If you set it up, I’m sure some BB members would help you! The money doesn’t go to you in cash, but if you or someone close to use has a card or bank account, you can put that information in the website (with permission) and when the money goes to the account, the owner can withdraw money for you.

If I think of anymore, I’ll update!

Also, it seems a bit traditional, but dog walking for people is pretty good. A lot of people don’t like waking up early to walk their dogs, especially in bad weather, so if anyone in your neighborhood who you relatively trust and has a dog, you can ask if you can walk their dog for some money regularly for the spay.

Yeah I have set up a GoFundMe ( this post was originally about that ) but bam didn’t allow that because it’s against forum rules to ask for donations or something like that.

Ah, I see! That makes sense. Would posting it on any social media accounts you have be a good way to do this?

That’s correct, members cannot ask for donations or put links to crowd sourcing pages on the forum. Here is the relevent section of the Rules for those who are unaware.

At 3 months old, you have a bit of time to save up the funds. $80 is a fantastic price, by the way! I definitely had to pay more to get my females desexed. Even the boys cost more.
The girls can be done by age 6 months but it would be okay to wait until older also (say 1 – 1.5 yrs old) especially if she is your only rabbit.

Wow $80!!!! My boys were $170 each

If she is only 3 months old you have at least 4 months to save – if not 9months from now is fine too.
                            $80 over 4 months is only $5 a week
                            $80 over 9 months is only $2.20 a week

If you are a child living in home perhaps ask your parents for some jobs to earn that at home ie wash the car once a week

I think you need to look at how you will provide for emergency vet care or treatment as needed to in advance and form a plan – as with any pet things can suddenly come up where a few hundred is needed quickly and if $80 is difficult to come up with over 9 months you may find the extra costs difficult
It’s just worth making a plan in advance ( obviously most of us cant plan for huge expenses like sudden $500 bills ) but for a standard vet visit cost of she became unwell ( here that is $70 just for the visit ) and for annual check up too.
Maybe you could arrange a account at your vets you can add credit too in advance – so you can pay the $2.20 a week directly to them until you have enough build up for the spay ..and continue paying the $2.20 a week after that so you have something there if you suddenly have to go to the vet

It would be worth talking to your parents about how you will deal with sudden expenses though – if something bigger came up and she had to stay at the vets a couple of nights , or needed fluids / critical care or antibiotics etc – it can add up quickly.

Boston’s Mama gave great advice about the payment plan/vet credit.

I also am concerned about medical emergencies – unfortunately with rabbits, problems can come on quick and they need fast response. Not like with cats or dogs for example where you might be able to wait til the weekends over. When a rabbit gets poorly, they need immediate vet intervention. Do you have funds set aside for this? If not, you need to work out how you will deal if something like this were to occur.

I’m not sure how old you are, but are you a minor? (Don’t have to specify your age) If so, do you have your parent’s support financially should you need it?

Thanks for the advice, and yes I am a teenager and in case of a emergency my parents would help pay.
