Hello and thank you all for reading this, and thanks in advance for your kind and helpful response(s). There’s a long story as to how i was blessed with my amazing sweet angel bunnies. My girl bunny who I’m posting about, was the first person -who happens to be a very furry person- to get me to truly open my heart up to another sentient being in 15 years, and I cry every time i think about ever having to live a day without her. I was feeding her and her bond-mate five quarterCups portions of oxbow adult food a day between the two of them, but I’m going to have to bring it down to 4 quarterCups and maybe 3 if she’s still overweight after a couple weeks or so. So i love them and I’m still working on figuring out a good diet amount for them. I am sorry i haven’t taken care of this issue of which I am posting about sooner. I have had her on her back twice already today so i don’t want to get a picture of the problem I’m describing now, but i certainly can later if necessary. I think it may be fur that has hardened as it says in my post summray. If so, i am considering giving her a nice warm shallow bath to loosen it up and maybe trim it as close as SAFELY possible, -as i know it could be disastrous to even knick her skin the slightest amount cuz it will tear open further- but i want to make sure it isn’t some kind of normal live tissue or tumor before i do that. Any guidance will be appreciated. I won’t do any cutting til i get some advice or until i can confirm it is only terribly matted fur by soaking it if it loosens up and i can clearly identify that it is all ONLY fur. Thank you.

          Hi and Welcome to BB!

Sounds like you are referring to clogged scent glands. Some bunnies need them cleaned routinely. Here is a link with some pictures for you to compare.

          http://brighteyessanctuary.org/educ…lands.html

If you are having a hard time cleaning them, it might be best to have a vet do it the first time to show you how. There are plenty of articles and youtube vids out there, however, to help you get the job done.

Warning: It’s very gross and SMELLY!!!!!! I suggest wearing latex gloves because the smell really stays on your hands.

Thank you very much for the quick helpful response. I think that it is the scent glands like you said. I will try to get it resolved by the end of this week and try to remember to write a response here about how it went. She is doing good today. I finally got to her nails today which weren’t too bad. I call them nails and not claws. Thanks again!

Here is a little video with instructions on how to clean a bun’s scent glands. It’s with Mary S Cotter and very good. It’s best if you can get someone else to help you hold the rabbit while you do the cleaning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_x9dbSUdomg

But as LPT says, it might feel safer for you to have a vet or vet tech show you how the first time.

That is a very cute video. I have decided to warm up my bathtub all day with warm water, and now I’m going to put some more nice warm, but not too warm, water in it again now that the cast iron is nice and warmed up.And let my bunnie’s butt soak in it for a while… *just her butt area tho, and i will have a nice clean warm shirt to burrito her with and set beneath her when i go to attempt to work on her butt;  if i’m not comfortable about her health and safety, i will just keep her warm and dry and wait to have a qualified small animal vet show me*  … Before I try to do anything with the scent gland. Poor bunneh’. 🙁
                To be continued…
… Buzzy and I are both feeling too tired and relaxed tonight so it will be done later.
…sorry if text gets weird I’m having technical issues with doing this edit on a mobile phone.

I got it taken care of finally and she’s doing okay. She’s better but still needs to lose more weight. I will be bringing her to a vet to make sure her bellies are okay no matter how much it costs when i get the money.

Glad you got her scent glands cleaned! Some buns need cleaning regularly and some buns do most of the cleaning in that area themselves. Being chubby of course makes it more difficult to reach down there, of course.

Do you think she’s having trouble with her belly?
