I just gave Bella some lettuce and she ate it and after the first piece, she gagged. You know how cats kinda move something in their stomach when you pet their back? She did that with her body. I tried giving a smaller piece to see if she was Just overwhelmed with the bigger piece, but she gagged on that too. Do bunnies even gag? This Is my first time seeing a rabbit do this nor i have heard that they can do that. Bunnies can’t puke so why did she gagged? Could it be something wrong with the lettuce? It’s in the fridge for 4 days but still pretty fresh. I washed the leaves good so it has no dirt on. I gave her hay to eat to kinda ease her stomach. I’m pretty sure she just ate her veggies real fast but just wanted to check.

We actually had a member mention this about her buns not long ago. They gagged on lettuce. She made a video of it.

Rabbits can gag (I don’t know if they have a true gag reflex though) if they eat too quickly. It’s more common with pellets though, and it can be life-threatening if a bun inhales a pellet into its lungs. I don’t know if that’s even possible with lettuce.

here’s the thread about bunnies gagging on lettuce, with a video in one of the posts further down. Is bella’s gagging like that?

Yes, she gagged exactly like that but for about 4 to 5 times, she like shivered her whole body when doing it. She seemed fine afterwards, ate hay and was fine. Well it has happened to another member and to me, yes, i knew they can inhale pellets to the lungs but never knew that they can gag on lettuce. When i see her doing that again i’ll take a video to show.

My Blue gags when he eats spinach if he doesnt chew it up enough/swallows it whole I just know to feed him smaller bits of it instead and he is fine. If you bun constantly gags on lettuce, try cutting them into bite sized pieces, and if she still gags, I would stop feeding it to her. If it gets stuck or she ends up inhaling it, it could be dangerous.

I guess i’ll just stop feeding it to her then, she gagged on the cut up pieces which were small.
