Hello, I am the 30year old human to Lou Francis Bean Lynch my bunny son. He is already five years old his birthday was the 5th of May! Lou is an unaltered male that loves to be cuddled with and pet and played with but doesn’t love being manhandled (although to clean his “poo bum” I do occasionally pick him up and clean the poo off and have taken him to his wonderful vet who helps so much but Lou hate leaving his home turf so out last visit they had to give Lou a shot of bunny Valium! Because Lou is so SO so terrified at the vets office and also because he only humps his girlfriend (a rabbit sized cardboard tunnel) lol and because he is 5 I didn’t see the reason to have him neutered especially because he doesn’t bite or charge at you he is a sweetheart but lately we have been noticing that he’s putting off this sour extremely potent skunk or onion like smell only it’s not “spraying” because I guess spraying means spraying urine to mark territory. He uses his litter box and never pottys anywhere else. Also he started being more naughty where I change his litter and then he runs in and digs out ALL the clean little -same kind I always get- and he will dig and bite the litter box almost as if he’s either got too much energy or he is playing in a bunny version of a sand box. What bothers me is the smell. It’s hugely potent. It act ually made me cough. So do I just have to neuter him after five years of him enjoying his parts and going on dates with his tunnel? lol also the thing about surgery terrifies me and him because like I said he absolutely hates the vets he hates to travel and it really scares him so I don’t want to put him through all that if I don’t have to. I guess I’m wondering what could set this of- moth balls in a closet? Cedar oil and lavender oil from the room next door to repell moths? Those are the only changes I can think of.

          Welcome !

I moved your topic to Behavior section where I believe it will get more input from other members. : )

I wonder if your rabbit is leaving some territorial droppings around? Is he dropping some scattered about the place that smell a bit, or is in mainly in his litterbox?
The territorial poos are slightly shiny (not super shiny like cecals) and have a pungent smell. It’s often described as onion-like. Has there been any changes at home that he feels he has to mark territory? House guests or a new pet perhaps?

Sounds like territory pees and/or territory poos. If he does this every time you change the litter box, can you try to clean only half of the litter box at a time, and mix the old litter with the new litter so he thinks its all his old litter?
