So, earlier today my usually sweet bunny Finn decided to attack my mom’s feet. Since I will be leaving for college soon and will be living in the dorms, I need to make sure there are no hard feelings between Finn and my family. He is usually very sweet and has only snapped on two other occasions not including today. My mom was just walking past Finn to get to her chair and he whipped around and bit her so I don’t know if she scared him or if he just doesn’t like her. On the two other occasions that he snapped he bit my mom. Anything that can explain why he does this and how to prevent it from happening again is appreciated

          Is he neutered?

Most likely your mom surprised him and he was defending himself. If that’s the case, you’ll need to let your family know to look out for him while navigating.

Neutering is an important factor here. Reducing the hormones and aggression can reduce behaviors like that.

Does your family ever spend time with him, or is he basically “your bunny”? If they don’t spend much time with him, it would be nice to let them know they need to bond with him and spend time with him so he’s happy when you’re gone.

My rabbit has attacked my feet when I smell like my other bunny. Usually I just stop walking, crouch down, and give her some head pats to calm her down. I don’t like to leave our encounters ending on an aggressive note.

He’s not neutered because I can’t find any places near where I live that don’t cost an arm and a leg. I live about an hour from Sacramento in the Delta

I know there are several rabbit rescues in the region, and the House Rabbit Society itself is headquartered in Richmond. Did you try contacting them to inquire about exotic-animal vets?

Oh! I didn’t know they were in Richmond. I will have to contact them and find out if they have any close to me. Thank you so much!

It would be great to get him neutered. But also I just can’t stress enough that another member of your family should be bonded with him! I would hate to have him feel isolated when you are away at school.

I’ve been working on bonding him to my brother who will be taking care of him while I’m gone and it’s been a work in progress. My brother was his official owner before I got him so they already have some sort of foundation to build off of
