        Hello, everyone!

I hope everyone is doing well.

I am having a bit of a snafu with bunny housing. At my old apartment, Jake was always free range because in such a small space (I was finishing up my undergrad), it just made more sense to bunny proof than to build a cage. Now that I’m going to law school, I have been able to find a much, much larger apartment (same rent, score! Lol) so I adopted Julie (who has become Yulie).

Anyways. The original plan was to have them both free range in my bedroom and hallway (see pics of their spaces below). However, I’m having second thoughts.

When I had to separate them to have Yulie fixed, I put her in a C&C cage in my living room attached to a large house (see pics of the house below and also Yulie modeling it when I first got it, lol!). She still goes in there at night and when I go to work or school. The pen is approximately 5×4 grids. She LOVES it, and I’m starting to consider making the pen wider & taller and having Jake join. There have been a few instances of Jake digging up carpet in my bedroom (thankfully, it’s super plush so it’s not noticeable) and I’m worried he will eat some. I put a ceramic tile down in the spot and he stopped digging there. But now I’m wondering if a C&C cage is a better option.

What are your thoughts? I know the volunteers at my local shelter are more pro-large cage than free range. I’m just having a hard time deciding.

        Thank you!

*the free range set up in the bedroom was set up so they each had their own litter box (on a bed), a tent, a fleece, a couple toys, a water dish, and a tunnel. But lately, they’ve had no problem sharing lol.

          Hi PBW – I can’t read your photos….

I really don’t see a prob with C&C cages as I know when you are present and checking on them, they will be free roam and 5×4 sounds biiiig
And you will be able to contain their digging or peeing or whatever they’ll come up with – AND you’ll keep your apartment deposit !!

If you want to give them more floor time when you’re not there, a puppy xpen is brilliant – you can put your own carpet rug in that area so if they do dig, no harm done

Yay RESULT for bigger place for same $$$ !!!!

I’ll have an opinion in a year. Chewie will be experiencing an enclosure for the first time since he was a kit next June when he undergoes 5 weeks of quarantine in Canada. lol

But in theory, your ‘what if’ sounds like sound reasoning. Believe me, having gone through law school (and at one of “the” unis, where competition was insane), I can vouch for the fact that one doesn’t need unnecessary booboos in one’s stressed out life.
And like Vienna said: it’s so nice to get back that rental deposit! Almost as good as a tax return.

Thank you so much for your responses, Vienna and Q8! I’m definitely going to have to get my build on and start experimenting with making the cage suitable for both of them for when I’m gone.

The only other thing I am concerned about is that Jake–my 7lb mini lop mix–is MUCH heavier than little 3lb Yulie. Yulie has no problem bouncing from level to level, but I’ll have to do some re-engineering to ensure my big, ‘ol Eeyore is safe.

They look so sweet in your avatar, I can almost picture them in their little home now.

Don’t worry – Jake should be OK too…. if he’s young and fit.
My two middle-agers (3 and 4) who both weigh 13lb boing up and down the steps with no probs.
