Doing my first post-op care this week

I have taken so many bunnies in for spay/neuter surgery, but I always hand them off to someone else to do the post operative care.  This week I am doing post spay care for a little bunny named Allie.  She had her surgery yesterday.  My main concern is trying to get her to eat.  I have been able to tempt her with parsley and cilantro if I hand feed her, and she has taken a few small pieces of apple.  Keep your paws crossed for her.  Here is her picture.  She is much redder in person than she appears in the picture.

I do find with the females it takes about 48 hours for them to get more back to normal. It’s possible too that the surgery was done late and that makes a difference too when they bounce back once they get home. I’m like you too, I do alot more handing off lately after the surgery. I’m trying to remember my last actual spay for my rabbits or any fosters and I can’t remember although I know I had some this year (I think).

Have you tried any kale or fragrant herbs like dill? The kale seems to be successful for me for some odd reason.

I offered her some mint, thinking the smell would entice her, but she was not interested.  I still have some basil and oregano in the garden, maybe I’ll give those a try too.  I am going to go home at lunch time to check up on her.

I have done post op care for about 6 females, and just as Sarita said, it takes them a couple days to get back to a normal eating and pooping cycle. I have noticed that for some reason, if you break the cilantro or parsley stems in half it is more likely to prompt them to eat. I think the smell is stronger that way If she is already eating little bits of things I think she’s doing fantastically – two of my girls actually took THREE days to get back to eating. On the third day we started force feeding a pellet mush which really got them started on pellets again. So if you find she’s just eating bits of things I think thats a great sign!

Allie has definitely taken a turn for the better tonight.  She has eaten several baby carrots, a few pieces of apple, several sprigs of parsley and a few romaine leaves.  In the last hour or so she’s made about 15 poops, so I think she is over the hump.  I gave her Metacam tonight anyway, just to keep her going in a positive direction.

Allie went back with Auntie Heather yesterday.  She was doing well, pooping like crazy and eating hay and pellets again.  It was a nerve racking couple of days, but rewarding to see her bounce back.

Yeah, I’m glad everything worked out! Females definitely have a rougher time than males when healing, but sounds like you did a wonderful job just getting her to nibble on things. That’s what is really important. So good job!!!
