Subject: Rabbit won’t eat pellets or veggies

Content: I recently got my rabbit back. I lived out of the country for a year and a woman who owns a farm took care of my two rabbits during that time. She fed them alfalfa pallets and hay, but no veggies, which is why I need to introduce them to my rabbit again. One of my rabbits died while at her farm, we don’t know why, and yesterday I picked up my male, four year old angora. I left out timothy pellets, water, hay, and some cauliflower and broccoli for him last night and by morning he had not touched anything except for the veggies, and some hay, although I don’t know how much he ate. I tried to get him to drink, and realized he must have forgotten how the bottle works, and then drank a centimeter of water. He still hadn’t touched the pellets by late morning when I took him out of the cage into the pen where he ran around for an hour and a half. He didn’t eat the grass/leaves I left for him, let he veggies, or any of the pellets, bu tmoght have eaten hay and nibbled on some grass outside. At first he was exploring and nosing around, but then sat down for a long time, until I brought him into the house to brush him. He still won’t eat pellets, veghies, or grass that inleavenozt for him, and nosed away the waterbottle when I held it out to him, but pooped aand peed, so he must be eating a bit. Is something wrong? Should I take him to the vet, or will he just eat when he’s hungry?

He probably won’t eat the pellets because he was getting alfalfa pellets! Those are much much yummier than Timothy hay… it can be a real pain to make that switch. It’s like trying to get a toddler to chose salad over junk food!! Maybe you could see if she will give you some of the pellets he was eating, because it’s good to make a transition to a different pellet gradually. Also, storing the Timothy pellets with the alfalfa might make them smell like alfalfa, and you could essentially trick him into eating them! As for the hay, that’s the main concern. Was he also being fed alfalfa hay or was he on a diet of Timothy hay? If so the same applies as with the pellets-he’s being stubborn. How long has he been home? Perhaps he needs to settle in a little more. When I first brought my buns home they didn’t eat too much the first 2-3 days. As for drinking, try offering a bowl of water as well so that there’s the option to drink from that.

I’m so sorry to hear about your other bun. Binky free little guy!

I agree with BunNoob. Alfalfa is a lot yummier than timothy, both when it’s in the form of pellets or inte the form of hay. I’d try and get some alfalfa pellets or hay for him to get him eating again. I also agree about the water-bowl. If he’s forgotten about the bottle, give him a bowl for now. It’s important that he drinks.

How was he when you brushed him? A bunny that won’t eat and sits very still could have a tummy issue. If you have baby gas drops (simethicone) you can give that, in case it’s gas that’s causing discomfort. A change in diet can make a bun produce gas, and if the gas can’t come out, it hurts. Baby gas drops are not absorbed by the body, and can be given on suspicion of gas according to Medirabbit.

If gasdrops and alfalfa doesnt help and he’s still acting like sth isn’t right, I’d contact my vet. Rabbits can go downhill very fast, so I’d not wait too long. Are his ears cold?

Thank you for your replies, that was so fast! I think he was receiving the type of hay before as now, just grass hay. I will try to get some alfalfa pellets to mix in and make the switch with, but it a few days. He was pretty calm during brushing, but he normally is i think. He has only been home for two days but the lady who took care of him said he was good while being brushed. I just checked his ears, they were cold, but he was outside so maybe that was just from the wind or something. He drank a lot of water when I held the bottle out to him and some grass, but he won’t eat it if I put the food down on the floor or in the bowl. He’s probably just picky, and settling in to the new home. Thank you for the help.
