So Asriel is still on the Sulfatrim, and mercifully we’ve managed to get him to take it if we cut up a baby carrot and squirt some on each piece. He eats it on his terms, because he would NOT sit still for us to give him his meds.

Anyways… I’ve been told papaya would be good for him while he’s on the antibiotic. Would dried papaya be ok to give him? Boston doesn’t exactly have the world’s freshest papaya   If I do give him papaya, would it be ok while he’s eating a baby carrot twice a day for his meds? He doesn’t like sweet things anyways, but I just want what’s best while he recovers from his neuter.

        Thanks!

Papaya probably won’t do much good, it was used for hair blockages due to its contents of the nezyme papain, an enzyme that breaks down protein. Hair is made of protein, so the idea was for the papain to help chop it up chemically. But it’s never been shown to actually work, so vets nowadays as a rule don’t recommend it.

If you want to help his tummy during the abx course, a probiotic would be more useful – even if there’s not much real scientific evidence of that either in rabbits. Benebac is a brand often used with rabbits.

My vet would disagree but ultimately, it’s all about the meds right now (and not the hair) and the gut flora. Like Bam says, Benebac would be great, but in a pinch, a spoonful of plain yogurt or kefir will also help reestablish good bacteria.

I know you have a good a vet, Q8, so if she says papaya has good effects, I’d try papaya. It’s not like anyone has said it could be harmful, and the bun probably thinks it’s a very yummy treat.

                And the hooman.

But no worries either way. Nature made buns quite capable of coping with fur without papaya or pineapple – hence the lack of buns on tropical islands. LOL

I was skeptical at first too, but unless it’s a massive coincidence, when the wookie moults and there’s no magic P fruit on hand, beautifully strung poos. And when he noms on P regularly during monster sheds, no stringy poos. Keep in mind, though, that he is my one and only bunbun and tends to be wonderfully unusual in other ways too.
