I am absolutely Devastated yesterday we lost our beloved little girl Poppy, a mini lop she’d just turned 7 she went out into the garden on Thursday evening she’d only been out for about an hour, we noticed she was a bit floppy & lethargic & her breathing was a bit fast, I put it down to heat stress & tried cooling her down with a damp flannel over her ears, she was off her food & drink & she’d stopped plopping so I gave her some fibroplex which seemed to perk her up a bit, & pooh a little, she gradually started to pick up but would have bouts of fast breathing, I carried on giving her fibroplex & some metacam for any discomfort she may have been in, Friday evening she was back to her norrmal cheeky little self, we went out  Saturday afternoon & returned in the early evening to find she’d took a drastic turn for the worse & sadly passed away, I’ve been wracking my brains trying to figure out what it could have been, then I thought could it possibly have been ivy poisoning ? any help would be gratefully received.

Oh, Im sorry for your loss. I can completely understand trying to work out why your rabbit may have passed like this. Ive lost 3 of my buns and went over the “whys” quite a lot for some time afterward. Even now, years later. We truly cannot know without having post mortem done and even then, results are often inconclusive and don’t give the closure people had hoped for.

If you are thinking about english ivy, then no, I personally don’t think that would have affected her. There is also a school of thought that rabbits are not easily poisoned by plants. You might like to read this sometime. It is written by a vet who is considered a premier rabbit vet, though she is now retired.

To be honest, when reading your account of what happened, my thought was – maybe it was her heart.. Please know, this is just my speculating. Heart conditions often go undetected and we know how excellent rabbits are at hiding illness too.
Or perhaps it was something like RHVD2. It is not always fatal but does not present the same way RHDV does. We are still learning about this virus and vaccinations against it are not available in all areas, unfortunately.

My other thought while reading about Poppy was, how nice that she had that opportunity to spend in the garden. And I was glad to read she did perk up and you were able to get her feeling comfortable. Perhaps, being 7, it was just her time to go? Yes, rabbits can live longer, but 7 is considered a senior and a good life span for a rabbit. Again, I am sorry. It is so hard to say goodbye to them. xx

Please do share some photos or stories about her if you feel up to it.

I’m very sorry you lost your Poppy.

According to Francis Harcourt-Brown, it’s known that rabbits can eat ivy although it’s not a plant that should be picked for bunnies. https://www.harcourt-brown.co.uk/articles/free-food-for-rabbits/lant-toxicity-the-problem-with-lists

Poppy’s death and her garden hour could be unrelated. Fast breathing could indicate a heart problem. Maybe her time had come. I’m glad you got to enjoy her for 7 years.

Thank you so much for your support, Jerseygirl & Bam it’s helped to put my mind at ease, I never thought it could be a heart related issue or maybe perhaps RHVD2 I can’t understand why the vaccination is unobtainable in some areas, I have asked my vet about it on serval occasions.
Thank you for the article link I’ll have a read of that later.
                Thank you so much xxx

Thank you so much everyone, My partner and I feel there’s a huge void in our lives since Poppy’s passing, she was such a little character she used to sit with me on the settee & watch tv & if I got up to go upstairs she would follow me around the house.
For some reason my computer isn’t letting me upload pictures onto the site xx

Are you having trouble adding pictures as an attachment?
                      Some common problems are:
-The file size is too big, so the photo needs to be resized.
-The file type is not suitable. JPEG ,jpg PNG are usually uploaded without issue
-The file name contains symbols or is too long. Changing the name a single name/word will often solve that problem.

I’m very sorry for your lost Poppy. I had a bunnyrabbit for 3 yrs. 5mo; he’d be 4 in October. I can relate very well when there’s no conclusive reason(s) what caused your bunny to pass away. My cousin and I took the best care and affection which he reciprocated. There may have been some mishaps in his diet, but most importantly we gave him his hay. So I truly empathize with you. It’s been over 3 weeks that our Cupcake passed away, but our rabbit knowing that he was loved gives us comfort and sustains us. And I’m sure Poppy knew that he was loved. May our hearts be blessed with peace and joy knowing they’re in God’s hands and they crossed over the rainbow.

Aww thank you Cupcake, its absolutely awful isn’t it life just seems so dull without them. So sorry to hear you lost your little Rabbit Cupcake, its heart breaking the people who don’t understand the devastation it causes obviously haven’t had that special bond with an animal.

I saw a beautiful poem the other day…

                              In Memory of Cupcake

Over the Rainbow Bridge you went

I always knew you were heaven sent

I cherish our time spent together

Till we meet again… I love you forever xxx

Aww. Thank you Cathy joy. This poem gets to the heart, because it expresses truth, and that’s what I’ve been feeling. I believe they’re watching us from heaven, because God is love and only love abides in heaven. And these beautiful creatures only give love and comfort!
