I discovered just yesterday that there is a patch of skin with very short hair on the left side of my girl, Zuliet. It is somewhere above her front leg (pictured below). I can’t really see pink skin as there seems to be new fur regrowing. I have made an appointment with my vet but she won’t be available until next week  Any idea what this could be?

I have another bun at home but they live in separate cages and we keep them apart from each other (no physical contact at all) as they aren’t old enough to be desexed yet. So I have ruled out the possibility of them fighting/over-grooming.

Could it be the start of a major molt? Rabbits can molt in patches without anything being wrong with them. If the skin is uncompromized and smooth and new hair is starting to grow back, this isn’t worrying. Just make sure you brush her throughout the molt to prevent her from ingesting too much loose hair.

If on the other hand the skin is flaky with whit-ish crusts and there are dandruff-like flakes coming off when you brush her, localized hairloss can be due to fur mites. But they as a rule first manifest between the shoulderblades/nape of the neck.

Hi Bam, thanks for your comments!
Can molting happen anytime throughout the year or is it a seasonal thing?
I don’t see any flakes coming out so hopefully it doesn’t have anything to do with mites!

Molting can happen at any time, but the really big molt tends to be in spring. And some buns just happily shed all year round :/
