Oliver went to a new vet today who is more rabbit savvy. He was prescribed more SMZ, im not sure what that is but one of the assistants said it’s a mixture of some different meds put in one. The vet said it was the same medicine as the first vet we had been going to, but the past vet made it “in house” by mashing up pills and putting them in a liquid instead of the actual antibiotic plus gave us a dosage that is too small. She said he also doesn’t need to be on probiotics but I still want to give him benebac so he doesn’t stop eating.
Anyways, the actual topic- she said there was nothing wrong with his eyes and that his third eyelid is always showing because it is a sign he’s ill but didn’t prescribe us anything for that. I’m wondering, is there any brand of saline solution I could put on his eye? And would it still be safe even thought the vet didn’t say he needed it? Like if he doesn’t actually need it, will anything go wrong? He has some discharge and his corner of his eye is red.

What are the antibiotics for? Does he have a URI?

          Plain saline won’t hurt anything.

Yes he has a URI so she said that’s probably what’s causing it. His third eyelid is showing and his eye is reeeeeeeally red. I’m a little scared because before I knew about using a wet towel, I was taking his sleepier out with my fingers and I think I gave him an infection.. im gonna see if I can find any at vons

Don’t blame yourself too much for infecting his eye potentially by wiping boogies away with your fingers. I do that with Wick daily, including when he had a lot due to his URI. Unless you were fishing in his eye for gold and had really dirty fingers, I doubt you are the singular cause of infection. Always try to wipe outside the eye though, rather than getting in direct contact with it.

I think SMZ-TMP is similar to or also known as Bactrim? I am surprised the vet said no probiotic, but trusting the vet is always good. I think when Wick was on Baytril he would get some weird poops if we waited too long for probiotic; Bactrim I think he was fine regardless.

I use Saline solution everyday to clean my Bindi’s eyes as he has chronic teary eyes. I buy Baush & Lomb Saline Plus Sensitive Eyes. It’s a contact rinse but JUST saline. Make sure whatever you buy is just saline.

I doubt you caused an infection in his eye. Everything is connected in there. It’s more likely the bacteria migrated up the tube from the sinuses to the eye. It isn’t unusual for a URI to eventually affect an eye or ear.

Eyewash made for humans (it must say *eyewash*) is also safe and is a must for a bunny emergency kit.
