This topic is in regards to me bonding two bunnies. I have a 1.5 year old female mini lop (spayed) and I just got a 13 week old male Holland lop. So far I am shocked by how well this process is going and I believe it was almost love at first site. They are hoping in and out of each others cage and using litter boxes together already. However, the male Holland lop is mounting her as often as my female will let him. She’s being very submissive and lets him stay there until I pull him off after a couple seconds. I know this is an important part of the bonding process but is he showing his dominance or is he trying to mate because he is not neutered yet? This is only the second day so maybe it will subside. Thanks in advance.

You cannot bond a spayed female with a non neutered male – he is at an age where his hormones are dictating his behaviour and so he will continue to hump your doe because he wants to mate. Once he is neutered, and his hormones have died down, he will smell different so you’ll need to re-bond because your female may not recognise him.

They dont have a bond because he isnt neutered yet. He is acting hormonally and she is simply avoiding conflict. You wont have a true bond until he is older and neutered, and they meet each other again. It is safer to separate them now and bond them as adults, so his humping doesnt turn into aggression and territorial issues

Okay thank you. He is soon due to be neutered so I will make sure to house them separately until a couple weeks after his procedure.

I’d keep them separated for at least a month.
