My bunny has ear mites. I am not even sure why/how bc she has it bc she is indoors. I have been putting drops of coconut oil in her right ear for 4 days now. She absolutely hates it! Not just annoyed… but hates it! She will run, shake her head, scratch, and then hides under the couch. I am not even sure if it is helping. She is now terrified of me. Should I be concerned? Should I continue the drops and just slowly win her trust back? She will eat a treat from my hand, but she won’t let me pet her. I even went to the living room (her living quarters) and she looked at me and bolted straight under the couch. I don’t like the idea that I am stressing her out. How do I know if the ear mites are dying? Her ears are a bright pink. I noticed one looked black inside after googling I put a drop of coconut oil daily. That ear now looks less like a condensed black area and now more like a light gray area covering her ear. It seems less crusty/black/gross however it does seem like it’s covering more area of the inside of the ear. I can’t take a long look…she runs from me. I am new of this forum, so any advice is appreciated. I hope my post makes sense.

Why are you using coconut oil?

Against ear-mites you will need something stronger than coconut oil. Revolution (selamectin) is the recommended treatment. It’s prescription only unless you’re in Australia.

Ivermectin is another bunny-safe anti-parasitic that will help against ear mites.

Advocate is another alternative that can be used.

Whatever you do, don’t ever use anything containing Fiopronil (like fex Frontline or Sentry or Effipro) on a rabbit. It is deadly toxic to rabbits, so we always issue this warning.

Ear mites cause pain, so it’s only natural for your bun to hate it when you drop sth in her ears.

Well I read that any oil will kill them and coconut oil seemed the most organic. I didn’t want to resort to medicines and was taking a holistic approach.

She has been very aggressive/agitated due to the ear mites, so I didn’t want to take her to a vet. I thought I could treat it at home, I didn’t know they were hard to get rid of and required a trip to the vet. I will take her tomorrow, I just hate putting her through stress from a Dr., but I am sure the mites are already doing that.
