OK- SO imma make this as quick as i can

new rabbit mom. was never expecting to be one. and i couldn’t be happier! WELL i posted a pic of my new man online and of course of course i got someone message me telling me she has to move to an apartment and cannot keep her 3 week old mini rex. ALTHOUGH I AM NEW AT THIS I CANNOT LET THIS LIL GUY GO TO A SHELTER OR SOME RANDOM PERSON.

so ill be taking him and praying he and jack get along.

Jack actually gets on well with my hamster- they run around together and there were literally no issues – i realize this isnt the same as bonding bunnies- but i just mention it to highlight jacks incredibly tolerate and docile nature.

        SO two problems with this:

1- age. Jack is 10 months and this new guy- who will be named Bernie now- is 3 weeks old (so she says)

2- jacks going in for his neuter within the month- however Bernie is too young- should i wait till hes old enough and take them both in together? making jack a year and a half-ish?

or should i take jack now and hope things go well with Bernie till hes old enough?

ugh as always my posts are a little all over the place but if anyone will have any tips or advice or even experience out there it will be found here. so as always anything helps.

I would suggest getting Jack neutered now, because it’s better to get them neutered at a young age. Also, I think the bonding will go good since Bernie is just a baby. P.S. I’ve never heard of a hamster and a rabbit playing together lol that’s awesome

Baby bonds are not serious bonds, so it is recommended that you do not try to bond them before they are both neutered and healed, as the bond will not be “real”. Neuter Jack asap and keep the two apart. They will need their own cages/pens, toys, litter boxes, ect. You can keep them in the same room as long as neither of them are free roam or if you have both cages blocked off well enough that the free roam bun cannot bite, pull fur, or jump onto/into the cage/pen. After both are neutered and healed, you can start bonding

Totally agree with Mikey, you don’t want to have them together and “sorta bonded” and then come home one day and they’ve had a fight. Just being around your older bun when the younger one is around 3.5-4 months he will get hormonal and that will affect not only his behaviour but also the behaviour of the older one.

Also being only 3 weeks old this new bun may not even be a boy. When they are 8-9 weeks its easier to tell and even then I had to wait five months to determine whether my boy bun was actually a boy and it turned out to be a girl!
