I have never felt more heartbroken before.. Cookie has passed away today. Yesterday I knew something was wrong with him when he wasn’t moving and eating. His stomach felt hard and he looked like he was in pain. I looked up the symptoms and it looked like it was bloat: a disease that has no known cause and kills most bunnies in 24 hours. I was of course panicked reading this and immediately took him to the vet. They kept him over night and called me this morning to let me know he did not make it. He was just fine a couple days ago, we were cuddling on the couch and to lose him in a day is devastating. He died too soon, he was only 8 months old. I understand hes in a better place now and is not in pain anymore and I am grateful, may he rest in peace. I need guidance in what to do now, Cookie has been bonded with his brother Cream ever since we brought them home. Cream is now alone and he looks very sad and empty. He’s been eating a lot ever since he realized Cookie has passed.. The night before he broke out of his cage 3 times in the middle of the night trying to find him. Today we let Cream see Cookie and he changed entirely. He stopped looking for him and is starting to look depressed. I’m grateful hes eating but I’m still concerned for him. I want to get him a new buddy soon, I wanted to ask when do you think would be enough time for Cream to grieve and for me to introduce him to a new mate?

I am so sorry for the loss of your precious Cookie. GI stasis often sets in quick and without warning. Sending love and hugs to you and Cream.
You should bring a new bunny into your life only when you feel ready, however soon or far away that time may be. If you don’t feel ready, just spending some extra time with Cream could be helpful, or if you want to get another bunny right now, that is completely fine as well.

I’m so sorry about Cookie. As LEL says, stasis can take a bunny really quickly. And it’s terrible when it happens, especially with a young bunny like Cookie.

            Binky free, Cookie.

I don’t know enough about bonding to be able to recommend you any time frame for the introduction of a new bun.

              Binky free (((Cookie)))

Could you maybe take Cream to a rescue that allows dates, to see if he can show if he is interested in another bunny friend?

I am so sorry, C&C. I still remember the post where you first introduced the little guys.

My advice is to spend as much time as possible with Cream for a while. He’s clearly grieving and so are you. Give yourselves a chance to do that and take comfort in each other. When things get somewhat back to normal, then you can think about finding a new bun bud for your little furball. As long as Cream is eating and pooping, it’s natural (for most buns, at least) that he should seem out of sorts after the loss of his brother (btw it’s really good that he got to see him and say goodbye).

When your heart is ready to welcome a new bun, you’ll know.

                (((Binky free, Cookie)))

Nose rubs to your sweet boy and hugs to you.

Oh my gosh you have no idea, I have been looking for names that match with cream all day! I have been thinking “Ice” (Ice Cream) or “Puff” (Cream Puff) The bunnies Cream is going to meet are a fuzzy lop that is white and orange, an all black netherland dwarf, and a hotot bunny

Hope it goes well, Pippi was glad to bond with Jenny only hours after his previous friend Rusty was PTS, so I know some bunnies are ready for a new friend straight away

I’m very sorry for your loss of Cookie, it’s very heartbreaking to lose them so suddenly.

Wishing you and Cream all the best for your upcoming bunny dates.
