Yesterday I said goodbye to my very special friend. I was lucky to share an amazing bond with this incredible horse for 15 years. Right from her birth to the moment she slipped away. Part of her will always be with me.

Winnie had a condition called Equine Metabolic Syndrome which is basically horsey diabetes. She was very restricted in her diet and only allowed a very small amount of grass. It can cause laminitis which is a very serious hoof condition. She had laminitis several times and was lucky to recover. But it happened again and it took it’s toll on her. I made the incredibly difficult decision to let her go. Her last night, we let her out to pasture and she was allowed all the grass she could eat…..

Riverbreeze Mystic Bay aka Winnie……Run Free Baby…..

This beautiful pic was taken yesterday morning….her last sunrise

Oh no, LPT. So very sorry. I thought you’d been a bit quiet round here of late….

Horses are a cut above the other animals (sorry buns) and it must have been an incredibly difficult decision to make, which was the best one for Winnie. But Winnie is now leaping and laughing and jumping over all the other bridge animals eating all the grass that she wants.
Try not to feel too sad, but no doubt she has taken a huge chunk of you with her…..
                ((( Winnie ))))

She was such a beautiful horse, LPT, I’m so sorry you had to make this hard decision.

Run free, Winnie! Eat all the grass you want forever!

I am so sorry for the deep loss you must be feeling.

You’ve always talked about her with such pride. It’s very special that you were there for her birth and there with her as she enjoyed her last day here grazing. Significant really.

That photo of her in the sunlight is just lovely.

I’m imagining her now prancing around with your other furbabies, Steph. xx

Thank you everyone. It’s been really hard. It just keeps hitting me again and again that she’s really gone. One week tomorrow. I’ll be going to the barn this weekend to pick up my stuff and put flowers on her grave. I’m happy that I was able to bury her at the farm she lived for most of her life.

I’m so sorry, LPT. What a heartbreaking decision to have to make- but you made it because you love Winnie and put her above your own feelings. Horses are such amazing beings- I can’t imagine the loss you are experiencing. Wish I had words to take the pain away, but as we know that’s impossible. I hope you can take comfort in knowing that Winnie is free and healthy again now, and that you gave her the kindest, most unselfish gift we can give to our fourlegged babies.

Thank you everyone. It’s been pretty hard. I finally went to the barn today to pick up her stuff. Will not be getting another horse (at least for the foreseeable future but who knows down the road), although I will always love horses and am welcome to go the stable whenever I want. Everly likes to ride the ponies.

I went to unscrew her name plate from her stall and there were a bunch of cards from people at the stable on her stall. That made me feel a little better. I was planning to take a walk to visit her grave but still was unable. Maybe next weekend. I’d like to make some sort of nice grave marker and bring flowers.
