First time writing – help need please

I wanted to have a bunny ever since I was little and my old rabbit friend has passed away. Finally we got to it and brought a new one into our family. She had accustomed to our room immediately, she litters almost exclusively into a litterbox behind a sofa and we have rabbit proofed our room without any trouble… We thought were gonna have a perfect relationship so we had decided to remove the cage and have installed a super nice rabbit villa instead. And then the pain came… In the night she hops on our bed which is super cute but she also pees and $*&!s a lot. During the day when we arent on the bed she uses the litterbox though. Has anyone else observed this kind of behaviour? Could castration help? Im desperate because I dont want to lock her up every evening but this is a no go. We live in a shared flat where we have one room so things like isolating the bedroom arent an option…

          Welcome : )

It sounds like some territorial behaviour. Beds and sofas are popular spots they’ll mark as they strongly associate them with us. Particularly when we’re on bed/sofa.

          How old is she?

Getting her desexed will likely help (no 100% guarantee) but it’s better to get this done regardless as its better for her long term health.

Meanwhile, limit her access or…. put a shower curtain over your bedding ?
I remember a member here once saying that’s what she and her hubby slept with that over their bedding for a while.

It sounds hormonal to me as well. I would go with answer C, but I can’t say it will 100% solve everything. Spaying/neutering definitely DOES help though and for many bunnies it eliminates the unwanted behaviors because said behaviors were hormone-driven.

Definitely sounds hormonal to me, especially if she’s only doing it when you’re there. Our ladybun, at the height of hormone behavior, was pissing on the couch whenever she came out for playtime, particularly whenever we were sitting in a particular spot. Once we got her spayed and she was healed up, our couches have been safe ever since.

With our male bun, it took a little longer for him to stop going on the bed after his neutering, but it still stopped within a few weeks once the hormones had died off. So getting fixed and some patience afterwards is your best bet.

sounds like she’s being territorial, getting her spayed should stop it

Thank you very much for quick response. I wanted to avoid spaying but I guess it’s the best way to do this.

                  Here’s her pick btw  http://bit.ly/2dKwv1K

                    She is darling.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to avoid spaying. It’s actually better for a girl bunny’s health in the long-run. Plus you have the added benefits of eliminating hormone-driven behaviors.

If you avoid spaying your rabbit has an 80% chance of developing uterine cancer by age 5. This killed my first rabbit after the cancer eventually spread to her spine/brain. She also peed and pooped all over the place. My rabbit now is spayed and she never goes anywhere but the litter box.
